How can I become an actor/actress? What can I do to get there? Where do I find auditions?

I would like to know how can I excel in an acting career. Should I start by voice acting on social media platforms? Or should I search for audition opportunities? I had chances but missed them because I had no money, so where exactly can I find auditions that aren't high-priced.

Hello, Ivy !

I understand your situation totally and would be interested in sharing some direct tips and advice with you.

You've mentioned on line platforms - yes ! Do as much voice over and on line acting as possible. Casting agents are currently on board with audition videos to screen actors for possible call backs. Pick one dramatic and one light-hearted monologue and prepare a short video to submit on line to the casting community. Sometimes casting notices are specific and will ask the actor to prepare a specific type of audition, for instance, I recently did one audition video containing a short introduction of myself and an improvisation character that the casting people provided for me. Register with Actors Access for the free account so you can at least have a photo and resume on their platform. Many are saving money by using their phone cameras or their own digital cameras to shoot a head shot. There are free templates on line, too, to create an acting resume.

Go out for everything that the breakdown qualifies you for. Voice overs, under fives, feature parts, leads and extra work. Spread your resume both for in person and on line work. You should NEVER ever pay any agency or company to obtain acting work. With the exception of joining the SAG/AFTRA union , authentic casting agencies and companies will never ask you for money in order to cast you. Money is always an issue when you are taking your first steps in this field, but the expense seems to have decreased now that a lot of things can be done remotely and on line for some work. Money will be a huge issue if you plan to relocate to either of the two traditionally known cities for acting, New York or Los Angeles. I have lived in both cities and advise that Los Angeles has more work than New York.

Auditions that shouldn't ask you for a fee will be on Actors Access and any of your local casting agencies where you live. I also want to suggest that you type in a search for "actors agencies" or variations of that, and read their websites and register there only if they do not ask for a fee. Read the websites of your local community theatres, too and e-mail them asking about their audition process.

You didn't mention if you are high school or college level so my last piece of advice is, if you are under 18, share everything you are doing with a parent and get their feedback and opinions. Most of all, do not view this venture as impossible. Keep doing your acting and know that each experience is building you up to be your best self. It's not so much about being perfect. Just be yourself and you will excel !
