What should I know about being a therapist or psychiatrist

I’m 16, I’ve wanted to be a therapist since I was 11. After having therapy myself I wanted to be able to help people like that. Know that even if they’re going through thought times I’m someone they can lean on. Even if they have no friends I would be there.

One thing I wish i knew when i was younger is the fact that these are two different jobs. Therapists typically have a PsyD degree which is a PhD in psychology which prepares them to handle counseling and working with patients. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that knows a ton about the brain and its chemistry and understands what medications do and how they interact with one another. Both fields will know a lot about the other, but they do branch out into their own domains. Psychology will dig more into the counseling aspect of medicine and Psychiatry will dig more into the immediate relief. When combined these fields work perfectly.

I think in any helping profession, it's essential to secure your resources and know how to recharge your batteries so you can provide support to those in need. I recommend learning more about practicing resilience, dealing with emotions, relaxation, etc. Those skills can also be helpful during such demanding studies as psychiatry or psychology.
