Michael’s Answer

Hi, Hannah, thanks for your question. I would say: It depends. Ms. Bakshi touches upon it in her answer. When you look at the veterinary oath that you take when first entering the profession, the oath says something about using your skills for the benefit of society, keeping up on your scientific knowledge, participating in defending public health, and taking care of animals. You may be a veterinarian that understands perfectly how to look at pathology in meat inspection and teaches it to quality control inspectors in the industry. This type of veterinarian will likely not take care of live animals by performing health exams or surgery. A companion animal veterinarian will, at their level, participate in controlling the spread of rabies by vaccinating pets, and then there are veterinarians involved in the research and development of the rabies vaccines; their surroundings will be a lab, a vaccine-manufacturing site, or an office. Other veterinarians chart a career path in academia and teach future veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Veterinarians going to farms sometimes have to wait a few years before they learn the trade because the farmers they speak with are the ones 'taking care of the animals.' Once they have some experience, the farmers will listen to them more intently and the latest medical knowledge that will contribute to better farm operations shared by the veterinarian will be taken on board by the farmer. I even recently saw that veterinarians working for the U.S. Army were involved in giving Covid vaccines (to people). Those veterinarians, for that period of time, had their main mission to participate in handling a global pandemic. So the main job is ? The main job can take on varied forms. The essential nature of the veterinary profession is varied.

Aneri’s Answer

Hi Hannah! The primary role of a veterinarian is to diagnose and provide treatment for illnesses, injuries, and diseases that affect animals. Just like how we go for annual physicals, vets also carry out routine health screenings. Veterinarians deal with a wide range of animals, from our beloved pets at home, to farm animals, and even wildlife.
