What are some advantages or disadvantages of being a ballet dancer?

Wondering about my future career. #dance #ballet #dance-education #ballet-teacher

Thank you comment icon Hi Jennifer! I'm no expert in ballet dancing but I did some research on the pros and cons. Some pros include doing what you love, being able to travel the country/world, and pass on your skills by teaching future ballet dancers. However there are some cons to consider including low pay, low employment, low job stability, high chances of injury, high levels of stress, high level of competition, and premature retirement. I hope this helps and I wish you the best in all your career endeavors! Mireia
Thank you comment icon Hey Jennifer! I am currently a ballet dancer in a pre-professional company here where I live. I would say that there's millions of pros for ballet, some being that you stay active while doing something that can be super fun! You get to tell stories and speak to audiences without saying a word and that's a really beautiful thing to experience. I would say some cons are the low pay like Mireia said, but you won't get injured as often if you know how your body moves and works while taking care of it. High stress levels can be a big one right alongside comparing yourself to others constantly. Overall, I absolutely adore ballet and hope to do it for a long time. It gives me an escape from the world, but a professional career can be draining and hard to afford. Hope this helps! Keep dancing!! Avila

Katrina’s Answer

Hi Jennifer,

I'm a former professional ballet dancer and I applaud you for asking questions about the reality of a ballet career. There are many pros- ballet is a very creative career where you are surrounded by passionate artists that you become very close to. It teaches you grace under pressure, discipline, and the importance of hard work.

However, there are also many cons. It is a rigorous and strict career, you are expected to perform like the top athlete that you are, and often the discipline to keep yourself performing at your best is entirely up to you. Injuries are also unfortunately a part of it and can be difficult to manage and it's possible you may acquire an injury that reappears over the course of your life.

I highly suggest you take your time to decide if a ballet career is right for you. If possible, reach out to professional ballet dancers in companies you may be interested in to get a candid opinion of day-to-day life.
