How do I choose a career path that suits me?

For reference, I am a high schooler interested in math, business, design, and computer science. I am seeking advice because I do not want to go into a career path that I will regret or get bored of.

Thank you comment icon Hello, There are so many careers it can be a bit daunting. However, base on your interests I believe an Interior designer / architect or even an engineer may fit you. They get paid well also. steven kulchawick

You can sign up for internships. Based on your interest you should decide each step in your career. Working and doing internships will help you understand which kind of environment is suitable for you and where you thrive.

Terrie’s Answer

Choosing the right career path is not a simple undertaking. It starts with knowing your interest, your likes and dislikes as well. Understanding what inspires you, what motivates you, and what it is that you are most passionate about. Once you have determined those things, focus on if you could do those things for months and even years. Asking yourself, could I do this for a lifetime? If the answer is yes, go on to ask yourself other questions such as am I willing to work in a field that allows me to do these things. How much money does this pay, etc.

Deborah’s Answer

Choosing the right career path involves a thoughtful process of self-assessment, exploration, and research. Start by understanding your interests, strengths, and values, and then explore fields like math, business, design, and computer science to see which resonates most with you. Talk to professionals in those fields, conduct research on potential careers, and set clear goals and priorities to determine what's most important to you in a career. Remember to keep an open mind and seek guidance from mentors, teachers, and parents who can provide valuable insights and support.

Once you've gathered information and insights, plan your education accordingly, selecting a college major that aligns with your interests and career goals. Gain practical experience through internships or part-time jobs, and stay adaptable as you progress in your career. Ultimately, the key is to follow your passions while making informed decisions along the way, knowing that your interests and goals may evolve over time. By doing so, you will increase your chances of finding a fulfilling career path that suits you well.

Hi Sophia, discovering the perfect career path is often a journey that unfolds over time, requiring several attempts to truly pinpoint what brings you joy - I can certainly relate to that!

It's always a good idea to explore areas that spark your interest. Remember, if something doesn't resonate with you, you're never trapped. You always have the freedom to switch paths - you're never stuck in a field from which you can't escape.

I studied Mechanical Engineering in college and put this theory into practice through a variety of classes, internships, and job experiences. Even today, I'm still on a quest to uncover my true passion, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Keep going, and remember to enjoy the journey! :)
