Jonathan’s Answer

I imagine it may be similar to what medical schools look for in seeing candidates who have found ways to live into their interest?
This could be doing emergency medical technician training (EMT) to volunteer with a local crew for events or rounds. It could be doing volunteer work with a particular patient populations (those going through cancer treatment, mentoring and supporting children, health fairs for immigrant communities).
Particularly if you already have volunteer hours requirements for your high school graduation, it may allow you to synergize and get dual benefit.

Josephine’s Answer

Good question! The easiest answer is to check in with your high school's guidance counselor--depending on how your high school functions, you may be assigned one in the first place, and see if they have any recommendations to get you started. The next step would be to reach out to any of your Science teachers to see if there is an after-school club or organization that you can join or one that you can create that will be at least related to the science field.

A lot of opportunities that would be really beneficial to your college applications aren't really open until you get closer to Junior/Senior year or at least 16 years old, such as a shadowing program at your local hospital or other medical campus/office that participates in a similar work-study program. So, right now, the best thing to do is keep an eye and ear out while focusing on your studies to get the best grades you can!
Thank you comment icon Fantastic answer and advice here. Perhaps also looking at volunteering some of your time at a local medical facility such as a community health center. As Josephine mentioned, reaching out to your guidance counselor for help and direction would be the first step. Speak to your parents or guardian to perhaps discuss with your primary care physician about your interest in the medical field. Good luck. Sergio A. Aguirre, Jr.
