Hi Yareli,
This is an excellent question! Deciding on which college to attend is one of the most important decisions we can make. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to be sure you are choosing the best college for you!
I would start by researching colleges that have established programs for the career field you are interested in. It is best to find a college with an established and accredited program so that you know you are getting a great education and background in the field of your choice.
After you have a list of potential colleges, I would also research the cost of attendance for each school. This is another way to narrow down your options. However, I would caution against removing a school just because the price is too high. If there is a more expensive school that you still want to pursue, you can always look into scholarships to help make them more affordable.
Just as you are thinking, it is definitely best to apply for scholarships that are tailored towards a unique group or attribute that you are a part of. This will narrow down your competition, and it is even better if you can find a scholarship that is not as well known too. To find these, I would suggest doing a google search and applying for as many as you can.
I hope that this answer has been helpful, and I wish you all the best!

Hello, Yareli !
You are correct ! There are so many different types of scholarships in addition to the ones you have mentioned ! There are ones for single moms, first generation college students, faith based, people into being environmentally friendly, and there are even ones on the humorous side like for duck calling and speaking in Klingon ! LOL ! There are scholarships based on merit, community involvement, leadership, average students, and legacy scholarships - that's when you go to a college that one of your parents and their parent attended. Scholarships website has a free scholarship search that you can do and I have provided the link to their website below. Also, your particular college may offer some memorial scholarships or other private ones only for that college so I would advise that you check with their admissions and financial aid office about that. Leave no stone unturned !
In order to find a college that you would like, the best way would be to start locally. Visit the campus of colleges that you think would have the major you want and get a sense of what it would be like to spend time there. Keep the tuition cost in mind, too. Assess the environment. Read websites before you go to visit as college websites usually have very complete information about what they offer. Than see if they provide information about an orientation day which would be really beneficial and they're usually fun and inspiring, too. There is nothing like the benefit of getting a tour with a guide who can answer your questions and provide explanations. See if there are any tour videos of the school on You Tube. Some of them are really great and inspiring.
Remember to make small, short term plans, each step taken will lead to big accomplishments. When you visit each trade school and college, ask students anything you may want to know about what it is like there. Trust your instincts and in the end, you will make a good choice.
