Sheila’s Answer

Hi,
Thanks for the great question. I am a mechanical engineer by training, and so I will comment on what was interesting for me over my career. Mechanical engineering is a fantastic foundation for many roles. I had the opportunity to work in the automotive and defense industries. Initially, I leveraged my skills in the thermal area where I worked on requirements creation, development/validation testing (including testing at our proving grounds and out in Death Valley), building analytical models, and designing/releasing HVAC/Powertrain Cooling related systems. Next, I had the opportunity to work as a Vehicle Systems Integration engineer for Propulsion systems which included early concept, development, and production activities. After this, I shifted to system safety role which included software, controls, and physical part safety. Most recently, I led a team for the Advanced System Integration of defense/military vehicles and projects. The mechanical engineering foundation skills enabled me to have a wide variety of career experiences. Best wishes to you as you explore your future career.

Art’s Answer

To answer your question is that Mechanical engineering is boundless. I think it is more so than other types of engineers. Engineering touches on every part of your life from food to water technology, environmental, transportation etc. As an engineer in general or a mechanical engineer you can design a career from the jungles of Asia, to a cube farm in Detroit. To get yourself started take as many STEM classes as possible, to allow you to get into an engineering college, put in a couple of years of general engineering classes in college until you are able to take electives to focus on as reflective of your aptitudes. Your guidance Councillors can help you with that. I concur with the other answers above, study hard and look towards a focus that fits you in interests and aptitudes, leave room for any plan "B" s that you might have, even after you have been hired you may want to keep your eyes open to future options.

Art recommends the following next steps:

Take all the STEM you can while iin High school
Enroll in a Mechanical Engineering BS Plan or program (Community Coledge offer many Engineering Classes
