Hello Divyesh,

Congratulations to you for understanding that learning and seeking new opportunities is a lifelong journey, regardless of your age. In New Jersey, there are numerous programs that can offer you both mentorship and deep insights into the field you're passionate about. Take, for instance, the High School STEM Research Programs.

NJIT, a renowned institution, provides exceptional opportunities for career growth and professional development in STEM areas. These opportunities are not only available to undergraduates but also to high school students. Through the Provost Summer Research and faculty-focused grants and research centers, NJIT is dedicated to offering practical research experience to high school students.

This hands-on experience is facilitated under the watchful eye of a faculty advisor, with close mentoring from NJIT undergraduate and graduate students. Here's a link that will give you more detailed information and the application for the upcoming 2024 year.

Keep up the great work, Divyesh, and remember, the sky's the limit!

Thank you comment icon Thank you for all of your help! I'm also curious whether there are programs that run during the school year as I have found cold emailing ineffective so far. I have emailed many professors and want to know whether there are more effective ways to get a mentor to work under for possible research projects that they are performing. Divyesh

Hey Divyesh!

It's fantastic to see your enthusiasm for diving into Medical Research - well done!

New Jersey has a wealth of medical research opportunities that high school students like you can take advantage of. Here are a few you might want to explore:

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School: This institution offers internships and research programs that allow high school students to collaborate with faculty and scientists across a variety of biomedical fields.

Biomedical Research Institute of New Jersey: Here, high school students are given a two-week, immersive research experience where they can carry out biomedical research in a cutting-edge laboratory.

Coriell Institute for Medical Research: This institute provides a summer program where high school students can work side by side with globally recognized researchers, offering a glimpse into potential careers in science or related fields.

These are just a few examples of the medical research opportunities available to high school students in New Jersey. For more options, consider reaching out to your school counselor, local hospitals, or searching through online databases.

Best of luck with your research journey!

Thank you comment icon Hi Divyesh, Have you thought about asking your school counselor or Academic Advisor to help match you with research projects or at least give you some names you could investigate further? Joan Shea

Hi there - I think a good place to start is NJ medical school - they have a residency program and may have opportunities for high school students. Columbia University also used to offer opportunities for high school students specifically in the summer though. I would search for the graduate medical education dept at UMDNJ and start there. They may be able to refer you. That being said, smaller hospitals often have physicians doing research (especially in the infectious disease and immunology departments). Rutgers University would also be a good place to look at.
