Hello, Franklyna !
I agree that the combined major is the better option. A double major might take longer. It may be better to do it as combined so that you can forge forward sooner with your career. It certainly is a very unique and interesting but not surprising course of study that you are planning. It also sounds, with that combined major, that you are covering necessary ground to prepare you for your line of work when you graduate.
My advice is to be 100% sure that you want to do this combined major so that you can see it through to completion. It will pose challenges if you change your mind mid-stream. I also want to suggest that you explore the different guidelines of combined majors at specific universities to get an idea of how it works and course load you will have. Be very sure that you want to do this. I am not sure how things are for Ghana, but in the U.S., I didn't take a "combined" major, rather a major and a minor and was able to have careers in both subjects. You should talk more to the people who have suggested the combined major route as they will know the details and requirements in your country. You will have to decide which is the best course of study for you.
I hope that my feedback is a bit helpful and I wish you all the best with such a wonderful course of study !

I think going for a double major is a great idea. you need to make sure that there are jobs available in those fields once you graduate. You would be better getting a STEM related field with a minor in another language.
It sounds like you want to help people. Maybe look into a degree in Social work or psychology, Good luck!

Hi Franklyna,
I too majored in Sociology. My first question to you would be, what do you want to do with that major? I did not do my research as much as I should have and struggled to find a job in that field. I wanted to work with disadvantaged youth, but did not realize how little the salary was, or the locations that the jobs were available in. (I would have to travel far for little pay) I really enjoyed the classes and that is why I chose the major plus an internship with disadvantaged youth. I would suggest the same reasoning for French, what would you plan to do with that major? Would you want to teach the French Language in school or college? Would you want to be a translator for hospitals or large companies?
Overall, if you are able to double major for a little more time and money while in college I say go for it!

Hi Franklyna,
Studying another language like French is a great way to expand your horizons and access a different perspective on the world. I also struggled to choose between a French major and French minor - I ultimately chose to do a minor. I would suggest thinking about what your goals are in studying the language - is it to get a job, is it because you love French literature, is it because you want to be able to live in a French speaking country? Depending on how you answer those questions, you can decide whether it is worth committing the time to doing a major versus a minor. Good luck with your decision and enjoy college!
