Hello Lila,
Embarking on a modeling career can be an exciting journey, and there are several steps you can take to boost your chances of making it big. Here's a friendly guide to help you kick-start your modeling adventure:
1. Know Yourself and Your Industry:
- Assess your potential: Give yourself a good look in the mirror. Do you have the physical traits that models usually have? Things like height, body shape, facial features, and overall look are important in this business.
- Learn about modeling types: There are many kinds of modeling like fashion, commercial, fitness, plus-size, and runway. Each one has different requirements and caters to different audiences. Get to know them all!
- Get the industry know-how: Stay in the loop about what's hot and what's not in the modeling world. Keep an eye on the latest fashion trends, popular brands, and big names in the industry.
2. Create a Stellar Portfolio:
- Get professional photos: Splurge a little on professional photos that show off your potential as a model. Find a good photographer who knows their way around fashion or modeling shots.
- Show off your range: Your portfolio should have a mix of images that show off different styles, poses, and expressions. This shows you can handle a variety of modeling gigs.
- Quality matters: When choosing photos for your portfolio, pick the best ones that show off your unique features and strengths. Quality beats quantity every time.
3. Join an Agency or Go Solo:
- Find a good agency: Look for top-notch modeling agencies in your area or in big fashion cities. Check out their reputation, who they've worked with, their success stories, and any warning signs.
- Apply: Follow the agency's rules when you apply. Usually, you'll need to send in your portfolio, your measurements, and some personal info.
- Try freelancing: If you like working on your own, think about freelancing. Network with photographers, designers, and makeup artists for collaborative projects. Make a name for yourself on social media and professional modeling websites.
4. Get Out There and Network:
- Go to industry events: Show up at fashion shows, modeling conventions, and industry parties to meet people in the business. Networking can lead to job opportunities and getting your name out there.
- Use social media: Make a professional social media profile on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Keep your profiles updated with great photos and connect with industry professionals.
- Team up with local creatives: Work with local photographers, stylists, makeup artists, and designers to add to your portfolio and get noticed in your community.
5. Be Professional and Keep Going:
- Stay professional: Always be professional in your modeling career. Show up on time, be respectful, and be reliable at castings, fittings, and photo shoots.
- Keep improving: Attend workshops or classes about modeling, posing, runway walking, or acting. Always be looking for ways to get better.
- Don't give up: Rejection is part of the modeling business. Stay strong and keep looking for opportunities. Learn from each experience and use it to get better.
Remember, modeling can be tough and competitive. It's important to stay positive, take care of your health, and be ready for both the highs and lows along the way.

Hello, Lila !
I would be happy to share some advice with you about modeling. I do not know how old you are, but if you are under 18, you will first need to have a parent or a supportive, dedicated adult oversee whatever you do with your modeling. If you are over 18 you can try it on your own.
Well, there's so much you'll have to do actually. The first thing would be to enroll in modeling classes where you live. You don't have to go to modeling school if you don't want to but it will be good for making connections as well as learning about different types of modeling, how to do a photo shoot, posture and walking, make up, the business end of modeling, and health and safety. If you can't or do not want to go to modeling school, I would advise reading up on modeling and viewing how-to videos. You will than have to get some photos taken and sign up on some child or regular category modeling websites like Go Models. They have a category for regular models and plus size models and Child Models aged 2 - 15. Read the website and see which category(s) you qualify for. So this is how you start. I do recommend getting in person training, though.
To get a job as a model, your agency will send you out to be seen for different jobs. The client will already have in mind the type they are looking for and you will also need to ace the interview and have some experience with modeling. If you make a lot of personal contacts you may get work through them without much experience. We all have to start somewhere. You can also get work by directly sending your photos out to job notices. Sign up with Indeed first because there are a lot of jobs for various types of modeling on there sometimes. You won't be able to start a career until you are sure that you have transportation and are not in school full time. You may get a job that takes 5 hours or a job that takes 5 days. The website Yelp has a nice listing for modeling agencies in your area and I have provided the link of this list for you below.
Keep up with the latest styles, look at a lot of fashion magazines and pay attention to commercials, fashion magazines and print advertising because those are the media that you may work in one day. You've probably heard of a portfolio that you must have also. That is a collection of hard copy photos as well as can be on line but you'll need to bring your portfolio with you to show people. So try to have both.
It is a lot of work, warrants a lot of support but it can be done if you are ready for it. Keep asking for advice and try to ask very specific questions as modeling is not so broad nor is it easy or quick to explain how to "start" being a model. Read more about the subject and continue to visit us here and we'll be happy to answer any other questions based on specifics. I think that you will do well and eventually be very happy in the industry. Never give up and I wish you the very best !
