Hello Amara,
Creating a plan for your future that will help you achieve your academic dreams and potential requires careful consideration and strategic steps. Starting in high school is an excellent time to lay the foundation for your future success in nursing and increase your chances of getting into a good college and securing scholarships. Here are some key steps to consider:
1. Academic Excellence: Building a strong academic foundation is crucial for pursuing a career in nursing. Focus on excelling in core subjects such as science, math, and English. Take challenging courses that align with your interests and demonstrate your commitment to academic rigor. Maintaining a high GPA throughout high school will be essential for college admissions.
2. Extracurricular Involvement: Engaging in extracurricular activities can enhance your college application and demonstrate your passion for nursing. Join clubs or organizations related to healthcare, such as HOSA-Future Health Professionals, which offers opportunities for leadership, community service, and networking. Participate in volunteer work at hospitals, clinics, or nursing homes to gain firsthand experience in the healthcare field.
3. Shadowing and Internships: Seek out opportunities to shadow nurses or participate in internships at local healthcare facilities. This will provide you with valuable insights into the profession and allow you to observe nurses in action. Not only will this experience strengthen your understanding of the field, but it will also demonstrate your commitment and dedication to pursuing a career in nursing.
4. Research Colleges: Begin researching colleges that offer strong nursing programs. Look for institutions with accredited nursing programs that align with your career goals. Consider factors such as program reputation, faculty expertise, clinical opportunities, and resources available for students. Make a list of potential colleges that you would like to apply to.
5. Standardized Tests: Prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT by utilizing study resources and taking practice exams. Many colleges require these scores as part of their admissions process. Consider enrolling in test preparation courses or utilizing online resources to improve your performance.
6. College Applications: When applying to colleges, highlight your passion for nursing and showcase your academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, and healthcare-related experiences. Craft a compelling personal statement that demonstrates your commitment to the field and why you are a strong candidate for their nursing program. Request letters of recommendation from teachers, mentors, or healthcare professionals who can speak to your abilities and potential as a nurse.
7. Financial Aid and Scholarships: Research available scholarships and financial aid options specifically for nursing students. Many organizations and institutions offer scholarships to students pursuing careers in healthcare. Explore local, regional, and national scholarship opportunities and ensure you meet all application requirements and deadlines.
8. Continued Learning: Stay updated on advancements in the nursing field by reading reputable publications, attending conferences or workshops, and engaging in online learning platforms. This will demonstrate your dedication to ongoing professional development and make you a more competitive candidate for scholarships and college admissions.
Starting early in high school allows you ample time to build a strong foundation for your future academic pursuits in nursing. By focusing on academic excellence, engaging in extracurricular activities, gaining practical experience through shadowing and internships, researching colleges, preparing for standardized tests, crafting compelling applications, seeking financial aid opportunities, and continuing to learn about the field, you will be well on your way to achieving your academic dreams.

Charting your course in high school to maximize your future potential can seem daunting! But breaking it down into manageable steps and getting organized can set you up for success. Start by reflecting on your own passions and aspirations - where do you hope to be in 5 or 10 years? Whether it's attending a dream college or pursuing a career, outline your goals.
Do your research - find out admission requirements for desired programs, schools or scholarships. If aiming for a top university, you'll want honors courses, solid test scores, engaging extracurriculars. Or maybe you want to build a creative writing portfolio for that English program.
Choose classes strategically each year to challenge yourself in relevant domains. An advanced biology course could fuel your interest while meeting med school prerequisites. Outside academics, pursue meaningful activities too - sports, clubs, volunteering.
Staying organized is key - use a planner for assignments, tests, activities. Find techniques to manage your time and stress amidst a busy schedule. Connect with teachers, counselors, and family who can advise you along the way.
With focus, diligence, and support, you can make the most of high school years to build a foundation for realizing your academic dreams. Let me know if you need any other specific tips!

Great question Amara!
There are a couple of things I will suggest to you for creating a plan for your future.
Grades and classes: You will want to take as many science courses or health-related courses as you can. Grades are important to helping you get scholarships but are not the only way you can get scholarships. I say this to make sure you do not focus on the grades too much and feel like you have to get an A in every class to become a nurse.
Experiences: Try to get as much hands-on experience as possible during high school.
Job shadow a nurse.
Volunteer at a nursing home or hospital
Get certified to get a part-time job as a certified nurse aid (you can usually do this once you are 18)
Whatever you can do to see what it is like to be a nurse.
Research: There are different paths to becoming a nurse and different areas and settings you can work in.
Research education paths and requirements. You can go to a community college to become a nurse, or you can go to university to get your RN. Some companies/hospitals will pay for you to continue your education- so if you got your associate in nursing and started to work for a company that pays for education you could get your bachelor's paid for.
Start looking into what path you want to take and where you would want to go to school.
Also, research what type of nursing career you are interested in.
I will also add researching scholarship opportunities and how you can earn them from the schools you are interested in.
I hope this helps!
