Hey Devetra,
Here's what I found online:
1. Choose Career Path
2. Attend Coast Guard Approved Academy Training
3. Earn Credentials
4. Advance to Rank of Ship Captian
Not sure if this is correct, but did my best to research.
Thanks,
Blake

Christine’s Answer
Hi Devetra!
I am a ship's Captain and I now am training to be a Harbor Pilot ( a local expert that guides ships into port). I work onboard many cruise ships.
Most ship's officers start their careers by attending a maritime academy right out of high school. A maritime academy graduates earn a Bachelor's degree and USCG license in 4 years.
After graduation, officer's work onboard ships to earn sea time and experience to move up the ranks ( 3rd officer to 2nd officer to 1st officer/chief mate to Captain). 3 years at sea is required to move from 3rd Officer to Captain, it often takes more that 6 years to gain that time. There are a variety of courses that an officer needs to take to upgrade as well.
With the licenses and certificates in hand, an officer will like work as a Chief Officer, First Officer or Staff Captain (depending on the company or ship) for many years before they are promoted to captain.
