Mark’s Answer

Trains currently and historically use many methods of power generation to make them move. The train cars are pulled by locomotives that may use any of the following engine types or systems for power.

- Steam
- Internal Combustion
- Electric

One of the most popular engine types powering freight trains in the US are diesel engines that either directly power the locomotive or generate electricity to run an electric motor.

"According to the Association of American Railroads, in a typical year, US freight railroads move around 1.6 billion tons across nearly 140,000-miles of track. Since the 1930’s freight trains have relied almost exclusively on diesel power due to its combination of power, performance, fuel efficiency, reliability, and durability."
