What career would you suggest

I am a freshman in college and I am currently majoring in Zoology. I have always had a love of animals and an interest in endangered animals. I am unsure of what career would be right for me. I am not interested in being a vet, but I would love a career involving animals.

Ken’s Answer

A very important step for you to take at this point is to get to know yourself better and see how your personality traits match with people in various career areas. During my years of college recruiting, I encountered too many graduates who skipped this step and found, when on the job, that they did not like the practical application of what they had studied. You can help to prevent that from happening to you by following the next steps:

Ken recommends the following next steps:

Talk to your academic adviser and the counseling center at your school about taking Interest and Aptitude Testing to see how your personality traits match with people in various career areas.
When you have the results of the test, go to the Director of Alumni Relations at your school to arrange to meet, talk to, visit, and shadow graduates of your school who are working in those career areas of interest, so that you can get some first hand experience of what it is like to be on the job in the environment in which it is performed.
Locate professional associations to which people in those career areas of interest belong, so that you can meet people working in those areas. Many times these professional associations have internship, coop, and scholarship opportunities for students. Lillian’s Answer

That is great that you know you like animals! Using that a starting point, it might help if you:

1) did some self-exploration as to what you like (e.g. how long are you willing to go to school? how much do you want in terms of salary? how do you want to work with animals in your future career?)

2) did some exploration into what careers exist with animals that are NOT being a vet. Take this quiz for starters: https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/career-resource-center/careers-with-animals/

3) talk with your career counselor / guidance counselor at school. They can help you pinpoint what it is you really want in a career and help you find something that feels truly fulfilling.

Lillian recommends the following next steps:

Take this quiz: https://www.learnhowtobecome.org/career-resource-center/careers-with-animals/

Hi CR:

Tell me, what is your dream..what would you love to be doing every day for work. It is important that you decide what to do - no one can choose for you. That is why I asked you this question. Then we can go from there. Kind Regards
