Hi Vanessa
Nice to hear that you want to attend art school and know you want to be a tattoo artist. However, few art schools have programs expressly for tattoo art. My understanding is that becoming a tattoo artist really working as an apprentice under an established tattoo artist. So, I would find a tattoo establishment and ask the tattoo artists there where they got their training, and what they suggest you do to follow your dream.
This does not mean that you should not go to art school nor take art classes. You can learn a lot in art classes that will help you as a tattoo artist. Tattoo art is based on solid drawing and using linear art techniques in rendering such subjects the human figure, animals, flowers, words, and whatever else your client wants. Good design in a tattoo is also important, and so can be the use of color. All these art skills are taught in art schools; you may not be able to draw on human skin in art classes, but you will get lots of practice on paper in your drawing and design classes. Good art training will also give you the skills to come up with your own tattoo designs, rather than copy them from books.
The best school will be the one that accepts you and will work with you to follow your dream of becoming a tattoo artist. So, when you start looking at art school, be sure to ask them how they can help you to become a tattoo artist. The specific school really depends on your grades (yes they do count), your portfolio for submission, and your financial situation, but most importantly, if you feel comfortable learning there. Since you live in Maine, you might check out the The Portland School of Art in Portland Maine, which is a smaller art school, but which has an excellent reputation.
I hope this helps!
