Nowadays almost anything (aside from large group recordings) can be done in a home studio, and all the software and instruction you could ever need is right at your fingertips. That being said if you are someone who lacks the motivation to throw yourself into endless hours of learning software and mastering your craft then music school can be very important (and there's no shame in it!).
What I think music school is most important for however is the connections. You will meet a ton of other producers who can get you gigs, introduce you to folks, and help you on your tracks. You can ofcourse also get that outside of school but it will entail putting yourself in a lot of different music communities and it can put you a step behind.
In terms of what to focus on, I think a successful music producer can produce a ton of different types of music. It's hard to make it as a producer and even harder to make it as a producer of a single or limited genre. All my favorite music producers I've worked with had a massive library of diverse songs that they loved and knew, and that translated into massive creativity in their work, as well as the ability to work with a lot of different artists.
Lastly, don't be afraid to invest in yourself. A 4000$ mic might seem like overkill but if you are serious about your career, then you know you that will inevitably need it and working up to it will end up being more expensive.

Find the closest people to you that do what you want to do and reach out to them, tell them you're curious. Have genuine questions about production, and that person ready to go. You may have to try a few people but eventually someone will be happy to share with you.
Best of luck!

Hey, dude! This is a great question! It depends on what kind of production you’re wanting to do. Are you wanting to do cinema? Maybe just some good bands? In some cases, if you’d like to work for a firm or in some sort of professional environment, you’ll need to make sure you have a degree. Scout out some good colleges and then work up a portfolio. If this is something you’d like to do on the side or just because you have a passion for music, you need to do just one thing... produce! Music producers aren’t the people with the best gear, or a studio, or whatever. Producers produce!
