Hi Lila!
I'm thrilled to know you're eager to explore nursing! There are plenty of free virtual programs for high school students like you, that can help you understand the field better. As a junior, you're already thinking about college applications - that's fantastic! By delving into virtual programs related to medicine, you're setting yourself up for success in your future nursing career. Let's take a closer look at some potential virtual programs and steps you can take to boost your credentials.
Virtual Program Research: Kick off by hunting for virtual programs tailored for high school students interested in nursing or medicine in general. Programs that delve into the nursing profession, healthcare, patient care, and similar topics would be ideal. These could be virtual workshops, seminars, or courses designed for high school students.
Online Course Platforms: Check out reliable online course platforms that offer free or affordable courses in nursing or healthcare. Websites such as Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy might have suitable courses or resources for high school students like you. These platforms are usually flexible and easy to access, letting you learn at your own speed.
Virtual Internship Opportunities: Think about virtual internships in healthcare or nursing. Even if in-person internships aren't possible due to location or current situations, some organizations offer virtual internships that let students get a feel for the healthcare industry, interact with professionals, and learn useful skills.
Healthcare Webinars and Events: Keep an eye out for virtual healthcare webinars, conferences, or events that welcome high school students. These events often include talks by healthcare professionals, discussions on current nursing and healthcare trends, and chances to network with field experts.
Online Resources from Universities and Hospitals: Many universities and hospitals offer online resources like webinars, lectures, and informational materials for high school students interested in healthcare careers. Look through the websites of local universities with nursing programs or hospitals that provide educational resources for future healthcare professionals.
Virtual Volunteering Opportunities: Look for virtual volunteering opportunities with organizations that focus on healthcare, wellness, or community outreach. While virtual volunteering might not give you direct patient care experience, it shows your dedication to helping others and learning about the healthcare field.
Professional Organizations and Associations: Look into professional nursing organizations or associations that provide resources for high school students. These organizations might offer educational materials, mentorship programs, or virtual events to support aspiring nurses at your level.
Networking and Informational Interviews: Connect with professionals in the nursing field through virtual informational interviews or networking opportunities. Reach out to nurses, nurse educators, or healthcare professionals who might be willing to share their experiences and insights with an eager high school student like you.
Online Learning Platforms: Make use of online learning platforms that offer free resources related to healthcare and nursing. Websites like PubMed, National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offer valuable information, research studies, and educational materials relevant to nursing.
Scholarship Programs and Competitions: Look into scholarship programs or competitions designed for high school students pursuing careers in nursing or healthcare. Participating in these programs not only boosts your knowledge but also shows your commitment to academic excellence and professional growth.

For free online career courses, I recommend Alison.com as a great starting point. The site is headquartered in the UK, but many courses are recognized worldwide. The site even has a resumé building feature, and it also gives you a link to your completed course certificates, so you can add them to your linkedin.com profile. Feel free to explore the site and add completed coursework to your resume, and definitely include any completed certificate in your college applications. Best of luck!
Thanks for the advice.

Hi Lila,
You are taking an excellent first step by reaching out and asking - the above information will take you far.
One thing I would add is that the many professional nursing groups also have social media streams anyone can follow, and very often have leading health information and trends in healthcare; they can also provide newsletters and journals, and you may even qualify to join a future nursing support group online - or as a student member of a nursing organization. One such organization has a New Jersey chapter called NJHOSA. Here is their website: https://njhosa.org/
Enjoy the adventure of learning! Seems you are well on your way!

Hello, Lila !
You can get in touch with the New Jersey Office of Volunteerism, Bergen County Volunteer Center, and Idealists Volunteer Resource Center and many more organizations that will assist you with volunteer opportunities for people your age. I have left the link for the Kids and Teen Guide below.
I have a unique idea, also. In order for you to get a feel as to how to work with patients without really doing so, you can watch some standardized patient videos on You Tube. This is during the medical/nursing student's exam where they demonstrate how they interact with a patient, applying everything they are taught. It will give you great insight for when you have to do it in nursing school. I have left a link to one of these demonstrations below but you can find more on You Tube. Make a search for "standardized patient nursing" and one day in nursing school it will be you doing the same thing as in the videos !
There is another virtual opportunity that you can avail yourself of through the Nurse Journal website. I have left a link for it below and advise taking the Introduction to Integrative Nursing course. There are other courses listed there and you can choose which others you would like.
I also think that you should take anatomy in high school and even study anatomy on line to become very familiar with all the body organs and systems.
Also, I want to mention that you also should do a search for nurse Telemedicine (Called Telehealth for nursing) and read up on the latest information about that. It is something that has been around for a while but this service is growing as we speak. Do some reading about it because I am not sure if one needs to already be a nurse in order to take a course in it, most likely you will need to be. Once you are a nurse, you can obtain a certification to do it, though.
I've suggested a lot but I also want to advise that you pace yourself, don't overload and definitely enjoy your independent study. By preparing now, you will have an edge on this once you attend nursing school.
Best wishes !
