Paul’s Answer

Hi Maria:

Having previously been in law enforcement I can tell you that there are many opportunities for individuals who pursue a criminology major. This can include careers which vary, including ones as a police officer, corrections, forensic science, probation and community service officers, loss prevention, and attorney or prosecutor. There are several degrees and emphasis areas in criminology, including bachelors, masters, and Ph.D. I have had the opportunity to work with individuals who are college professors, forensic psychologists, investigators and security specialists. The need is especially high for people who specialize in cyber security. They are the ones on the front lines battling the cyber criminals attempting to thwart their attempts at stealing personal identities and information.

I would look at the various areas of criminology and determine which area of emphasis peaks your interest, and determine which area you would like to pursue as a career. I would then research the various colleges and universities to see which one has that degree and emphasis. Talking to an academic advisor would help clarify your choices and help you to determine which area would be the best fit for you.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

Visit with an academic advisor to determine an academic path and select the courses required to help you to achieve your future career goals.
Determine which area of emphasis would fit your goals, objectives and aspirations.
Research the various careers and opportunities in the field of criminology
