Martina’s Answer

I am working my way up to being a curator so in addition to my masters degree in history I have obtained a museum studies graduate certificate and another in public history. As soon as I finished those certificates I was offered a job as an exhibition assistant working on a major exhibition at a well-regarded museum. There are also several graduate programs in preservation and conservation.

Martina recommends the following next steps:

Do some research to narrow down what you want to do curation is very different from preservation or conservation. Look for specific graduate programs in each and talk to people who work in those fields and ask about their various educational and career paths.

Sari’s Answer

I suggest a degree in art history or museum studies but I think any course of study that involves critical thinking and research skills could be useful. An advanced degree (MA and often Phd) is generally a prerequisite.
