How do I balance work and fun?

After college, I want to travel the world, but I also need to have a job and money. How do I save up so that I can have fun but also be a responsible young adult with a job? #work #travel #responsibilities

Thank you comment icon Honestly, would say if your goal is to have fun after college then you should work hard in college and then reap what you sowed. Joshua

Sabrina’s Answer

Hi Zarah - Great question! Learning to balance work and fun is a very important part of life. We all need to have fun in our lives, but making money is necessary to include travel for fun. Since you have a goal of traveling the world I recommend making a budget for yourself. If you do some research now to determine approximately how much your ideal trip will cost, then you will know how much money you need to save and by when you need to save it. This will tell you how much money you need to make and save now so that you can travel without going into debt.
Also, are you thinking about doing one long trip before joining the full time work-force, or traveling say annually once you start working? Most full time jobs today provide at least 2 weeks paid vacation time, so once you graduate college and get a job you can easily spend that time wisely if you have done your advance research and plan your trips accordingly.
Make a list of your top places to see and look into flight and room and board costs. Maybe right after college is the time to go to the places that are less expensive and save the pricier destinations for future trips so you have more time to save and can look forward to those destinations as your reward for long days at work.
Good luck and go see the world!

See suggestions below:

Josh recommends the following next steps:

Get a travel rewards credit card. There are a lot of different credit cards out there that offer travel rewards points, and all you have to do is use the card for your normal everyday purchases (and of course make sure you pay it off each month). The best place to start learning about different cards is here: https://thepointsguy.com/guide/beginners/
Research inexpensive travel destinations. Some cities/countries are a lot cheaper to get to from the US than others, and/or are very inexpensive (i.e. food, hotels, etc. are a lot cheaper than they are in the US).
Read "The Four-Hour Workweek" and "Vagabonding", which both teach you how to incorporate long-term travel into your life even when you work a 9-5 job
