In college, am I going to be able speak fluent?

I am international student in America, I studied English so much, and my speaking is not as good as my academic English. I want to be very fluent in English, people around me tell me that as I get to college, I will a lot of time to improve my speaking. Did anyone have experience like that?

I am so proud of you. You are so brave leaving your home country to come to America for education. I was an International student in Law School in America very recently and not for a day have i wanted to lose my accent. I dont know you but i think your English is perfect already. Look, youre probably much better than your inner voice would make you believe. Shut that inner voice up and tell yourself you speak crystal clear english. Of course you can always improve by reading a lot of books and trying new words, but thats not exclusive to you; every American can also improve their english; both spoken and written. So speak the best version of your english and support it with clean energy, and you will attract the best people. Anyone who talks smack of your accent has already shown they dont deserve to be around you, with all that negative vibe. Remember that as an International student, youre the flavor of whatever institution youre in. Own that flavor and speak loudly into the mic with your accent, original and unapologetic. Go you!!!

Stefani’s Answer

Dear Hilmi, speaking a foreign language one has learned in school only can be very intimidating at first. You are already doing everything right because you came here to immerse yourself in the culture and the language and by trying alone, you already won. With every day you are practicing your English with the people around you, you will become more fluent. Try to make as many English-speaking friends as possible and don't search for friends of your own cultural/language background only. Use every opportunity to chat with people, watch English films, read English books and before you know it you will no longer feel self-conscious about it. And I agree with Faith, an accent is the cherry on the pie, I still have mine even though I live in this country try for over 20 years now.
