Hi Leah! I don't think that there's one magic piece in anyone's success or failure story. I don't even think that there are clear lines that separate success and failure. That's a lot of talk about talent, success and failure. I think that you have to navigate things as they present themselves. Start by going to film festivals and attend Q&As, consider film school (or not,) volunteer as (usually unpaid) PA or assistant editor in some films where you live, make a film with your friends, try figuring out what you like the most. Film work sounds fancy, but it's a lot of work. I still struggle with the uncertainty of work, with making enough money, but guess what? That's what I like doing, that's the only thing I really know how to do. Good luck!

Christy’s Answer

I've had a successful career as a writer for decades. I would say, no, I don't think there are special, secret pieces of advice common to successful people. I think it's all well-known advice that's freely shared. Success takes hard work, perseverance, and a bit of luck here and there. Generally, successful people LOVE what they do. They devote the attention, time, energy, and dedication that requires to become tremendously good at whatever that activity is. There are no shortcuts.

But if you like, I'll share the three pillars that came to be my guidelines for my career:

1) You never know unless you try.

2) The worst they can do is say no.

3) Life is too short to work with assholes.
