Paper or online calendar?

I'm looking for some advice on organization. Many of my peers use a paper agenda to keep track of assignments and due dates. Others use online applications or calendars. I want to stay organized, but I'm not sure what's best for me. #organization #studying-tips

Thank you comment icon Hi Madison! Great question. Personally, a paper agenda helps limit the distractions that can arise with an online calendar and I find that being able to physically check off assignments sends a wave of relief, satisfaction, and accomplishment. However, whether you get organized virtually or not is totally up to your personal preference. If you prefer reminders in the form of notifications on your phone or laptop, maybe you should give an online calendar a shot. I recommend that you experiment with both types and see what works best for you. I wish you the best! Mireia
Thank you comment icon Hello, I would suggest an online calendar because it is less messy with all the paper, and it is always on your phone, and the phone can remind you of the event, meeting, etc. I hope this helped. Rich

I agree with the comments telling you that you have to decide what works best for you. I used to use the paper (physical) calendars, but have moved to digital because I always have my phone with me, anyway.

Determine what you will prefer to use (digital or a physical calendar) and then have it with you at all times. I personally use two digital Google calendars (one for work and one for my personal life) due to the fact that my business laptop is restricted for company use only. If I could, I would combine them both.

If you choose to use the digital option, I wanted to mention that it helps to color-code the different events, alerts, activities, and meetings. It makes it easy to read. You can access the calendars via your cell phone (so you can be anywhere to access them). These calendars are very easy to modify, set as recurring events, and customize for alerts.

In my calendars, I also schedule time to perform tasks. This way, I see it on my calendar as a to-do which helps prevent procrastination (so I get much more accomplishments).

Madison, This is a personal choice and you need to think about what is best for your needs. Can you use an online calendar and keep it updated without roaming the internet and forgetting to update it? If you use a paper calendar, is there a place where it will be readily visible to you? You can use both, a visual paper calendar and an online reminder tool for specific times or dates. Whichever you do, it is important to keep it updated for it to be the most useful to you.

Hi Madison! Great question! I would honestly say it depends on the person. I would first try out paper for a week/month and see how you like it and the next week/month try out something online. You won't know until you use it. There are so many resources out there online to automate processes so that is a definite pro as well as it is likely accessible and with you on your phone at all times. But, I will say there is a different satisfaction that comes from writing out a to do list and crossing those items out. I would really just recommend trying both out and seeing whatever makes you feel better and more productive in the present and longterm.

Would definitely
suggest an online calendar. That way you have it with you at all times and can set-up recurring meetings, dates and birthday reminders. I used paper for years and was so happy when I made the switch to online.

Honestly, try doing both at the same time and see what works for you. I'd also recommend taking a look at the apps for your phone. Since you have your phone on you all of the time, if you find a program that works for you it can be helpful. Additionally, see if there is an app or software that you can access from both your phone and your laptop so you can modify it with a laptop, but still be able to access your notes on the go. It can help to be able to study on your phone if you randomly get stuck somewhere and realize you can use that time to study.

I love both. I like the paper calendars so that I can physically put the check mark next to the task (for some reason this makes me happy!) But the advantage with the on line is that you can share you calendar with others if you need to. Either will work - just make sure you use one!

Hi Madison!

There are pros and cons to both paper and digital planners. Ultimately you'll have to find what works best for, but I can help to provide some considerations:

Digital Planner pros: Phone is with you the majority of the time, set reminders that will occur as alarms, search for events or reminders easily, synch to many devises and other applications

Digital Planner cons: Could get desensitized to reminders and swipe them away, distraction, additional screen time, need to learn new technology

Paper planner pros: writing things down can help you remember it better, provides a break from the screens, unlimited flexibility and no limits to what you can write or take notes on

Clearly there is a case for both - but hopefully these pro/con lists help you make an informed decision! My biggest piece of advice is to determine which you'll use and just stick to one thing so everything stays in one singular place!

Best of luck!

It depends on how you best work and what technologies you use! I used to put to dos on a post in with the due date on my computer and found it helpful since it was "out in the open".

As I grew professionally in my career, I started putting calendar invite reminders on my work calendar (invite reminders range from assignments due, a meeting, a reminder, or a time block for a break) as I frequently referenced my calendar to see what I need to do that day.
