Adrianna, animation has become an integral part of today’s digital world. From movies and TV shows to video games and advertisements, animation brings characters and stories to life. In my opinion I believe the universities below are the top 5 animation colleges in the USA.
1) CAL ARTS
(California Institute of the Arts)
Founded by Walt Disney in 1961, California Institute of Arts, or CalArts for short, offers one of the best academic programs for animation in the USA. CalArts is especially known for its curriculum in Experimental Animation and Character Animation.
2) SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN
Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia is one of the best art schools in the USA. Winning countless awards, the school offers a wide array of excellent academic programs in fine arts, design, fashion, media production, filmmaking, photography, and, of course, animation, among others. If you’re interested in the artistic side of animating, this school has everything you’re looking for.
3) SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS
School of Visual Arts in New York is another school that is all about artistic creativity. The school has over 1,100 faculty members and hosts a dynamic range of programs. They place an emphasis on critical thinking and artistic innovation, providing a great environment for learning animation.
4) RINGLING COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN
Ringling College of Art and Design is another top-tier school in Florida that excels in creative media design and art content production. The school is especially renowned for its computer animation programs. Many alumni have worked in world-class animation studios such as Disney, Cartoon Network, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon, Pixar, Santa Monica studios, and many more.
5) USC
(University of Southern California)
Students have endless opportunities to explore and learn various types of animation, including but not limited to 2D and 3D Animation, Character Animation, Storyboarding, Motion Graphics, VR and/or Immersive Media, Motion Capture, and so on. Many USC alums have moved on to work for some of the most famous media production companies, such as Pixar, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks, Disney, Sony, and many more.
I hope this is helpful Adrianna

For pure focused animation training, Animation Mentor Online (https://www.animationmentor.com/) and iAnimate (https://ianimate.net/). Looks good on a resume too, for someone hiring an animator. Both Cinematic Animation and Gameplay animation is available to you (two very different career directions).

Hello, Adrianna !
I would say that any art school is good. It will be based on what you bring to it. With choosing an art school, you may want to consider being at a place that can provide you with the best opportunities for your career. At the same time, you will have to figure out your financial means and if you'd want to go to an expensive, medium cost or inexpensive school for your Art Animation degree. That being said, let's look at Art School from the perspective of availing you with the best professional contacts and opportunities.
It goes without saying that studying Art in any college or any school in New York City would be the most ideal. For good Art Animations schools in New York, The School of Visual Arts or Pratt Institute rank very high. So does New York University. You can also obtain a wonderful course of study in your local area, but for the extras like networking, availability of industry professional teachers and mentors, opportunities for special projects, New York City would be the best case scenario.
Explore this on the internet. You can search for a list of good Art Animation schools for where you plan to study. You will need to look into this first hand because in the long run, it will be your choice based on what you plan or want to do.
In the time before college, you can consider taking some art animation classes on line. Some have a fee and some may be free. Read about some on the websites Skill Share, Coursera, Class Central, Khan Academy and Just Creative. I have left links for you below.
Always remember, it is your unique creativity that you will bring to your academic study for this career so almost any school that you choose will prepare you for a good career. You will just have to decide where you'd like to live and it may be a good idea to research doing remote animation projects, too.
I wish you all the best moving forward and I know the journey will be fun and exciting !

Hello, Adrianna !
I graduated from Ringling College of Art and Design last year, it has been an amazing experience. I learned a lot about the animation industry, pipeline. I am pretty sure that other art schools can also be good for you such as Calarts, SCAD, SVA. So I recommend you to try pre-college, if that's possible for you just to see what schools fit you and what kind of courses they have. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time if you need any help or more questions.
