Dermatology is a medical specialty, and the path to entry is the same in general as the path to any other medical specialty. It starts after you finish high school. First , you go to college for 4 years and get a bachelor’s degree. You can major in any area you want, but you will need to take a considerable number of science courses, so you might consider majoring in something like biology, but you will need chemistry as well and will also profit from physics. You might also consider learning Spanish because in many parts of America you will encounter a Spanish speaking people. After college you will need to go to medical school. It takes 4 years to get a MD degree. The next step is your residency in dermatology. This is also 4 years, but you might add a year or two if you want to do something highly specialized or if you want to to teach in a medical school. In sum, we are talking about 12 years or more after high school. It’s fun, but also very challenging, so prepare to work hard. Recognize though that the rewards are great. Most importantly, you will help people solve problems they cannot solve on their own. But also, you will earn an above average income and also earn the respect of people that know you. Most (not all, unfortunately) doctors are seen as extremely valuable and worthwhile citizens. So good luck! Work hard and I wish you great success.
