A lot of people that I talk to say that they switch majors in college. Is it always a good thing to do that? Also are there advantages/disadvantages to doing that?

I’m asking this question because I realized a lot of people switch their major. #college #college-major #academic-advising #changing-majors

Madeline’s Answer

It honestly depends on what you’re interested in. I went into college undecided and did not declare my major until I had to (the university’s deadline). The deadline was my sophomore year. Talking with your advisor helps, as well as being specific when you ask your advisor questions about different classes, as well as majors available to you. Many people change their major, my friend finished her Math degree, but she added an Education degree her junior year. She had to add another year of being on campus. Yet she found this was a better fit for her.

Madeline recommends the following next steps:

Right a list of things you like to learn about
List things you don’t like
Bring this list to your advisor
Explore the idea of minors

Hey Derrick! You are totally right, many college students do switch majors during their 4 years. It is better to switch your major if you are currently majoring in a field that you don't have a major interest in/don't excel in. That being said, it is good to plan before you make the decision to switch, since depending on which year you are in, it may be hard timewise to complete the requirements for your new major. The advantage is that you are actually graduating with a degree in a field you excel in!

Ultimately it is going to depend on what you're interested in pursuing as a career and whether you are currently enjoying what you are studying. In the long run I would say it is much more advantageous to pursue another major if you believe that you are not enjoying what you are currently studying or if you realize you no longer want to pursue the career that you set out to pursue. However, in doing this you may lose some money as you have to stay in college longer to complete your degree. I would suggest weighing out all your options and discussing a potential change with your advisor. Hope this helps!

Alexander’s Answer

There are advantages if you do your homework on the job market for the major you wish to switch to that will be marketable and not too impacted when you graduate. Also, before choosing/switching the program specifics are very important; such as your mentors, the courses of study in relation to their real-world applications, field-experience, and the focus and perspective the major/program and it's faculty have on the community and job market you seek. Finding out what they are experts in, as well as how well they can teach, train, and provide you support in your endeavors.

Hey Derrick great question I actually had experience where I completely switch my major early on. I was going to go into medicine and realize it was not the best field for me. I actually went into the Information technology field and was the best decision during my college career. I would say if your going to switch do it early on in your college career so, you won’t have to make up as much college credits. Another thing to try if your not sure on your major is take some elective course into something you might enjoy. It will at least open up your eyes to other possibilities. Hope this post helps.
