Will emailing professors at my top choice school increase my chances of being accepted?

I was advised to email the music professor who would be in charge of my studio and begin developing a relationship with him before he sees my audition because it would increase my chances of being accepted. In theory, this sounds logical, but does it work? Ethics aside.

Hi Cameron,

Like anything else, it all has to do with context.

When I was a senior in HS I reached out to the director of a new program at a state university. He was so excited to speak to me, know my interests, and to know his program was attracting people to the university. Unfortunately, although he had already accepted me to the program, the school didn't accept me at all. (That was my own fault and a different story.)

When you reach out to an educator you're basically telling them you know how to "do your homework" and take initiative. You show them you're a serious student, and serious about the field. It does't have to be extensive. Just tell them what you find attractive about their school/program and don't be afraid to ask them a question if you have one. Like, is there a certain piece of equipment that you've heard of that they may or may not have on sight? Do they have professionals in the field come out to discuss everyday situations with students? To network with students? Is there a specialized internship program? All of this could be on their website so check that out if you haven't.

In the end, if you walk into class the first day and they address you by name, that's a good thing but it's also something you have to live up to. You'll make an impression and they'll naturally take an interest in you.

Good luck, Sir!

Judeanne recommends the following next steps:

Research school/program website
Pick an item of true interest to highlight and a question to build a conversation on.
Email a professor, and don't hesitate to email the program director!

Let me put it this way because I did this not for college but in the music industry and my life completely changed.

Is it going to help to not email them?

That should say it all and can be applied to almost anything. Look you can't win I'd you don't play, and you'll miss 100% of the shots you do not take. Is it going to help you email the most influential respected professors at your colleges? Will it help to even email his colleagues expressing your wish to be heard?

It will, a whole lot more than wondering if it will or won't.

Best of luck 👍

Tyler recommends the following next steps:

Write your email send to 3 people that makes you uncomfortable to send to that is NOT your professor. Ask for their critique, and listen to what they say.
Redo the email or fix it up a bit if you nailed it 1st round then sleep on it and read next morning.
Let the flood gates open..... slowly. That means do NOT copy and paste a single message and make each one personable to whom you are sending it to. I never have repeated a single message and it has paid off huge.
As you feel accomplished sending your professor of choice, others in his department and a few others that you feel would know him well, start doing the same thing for the next school repeat the steps. Otherwise youll loose you mind waiting around.
Keep doing that above until you get what you are after and you will

Dam right it will, a hell of alot more than wondering if it will or won't.

Best of luck 👍
