After graduation, how can I use a major in Computer Science and minor in Graphic Design to become an entrepreneur?

My Dad majored in Computer Science, and he gives helpful advice. I know technology is the future, and I consider myself to be a computer junkie. However, I love sketching/painting, creating video games and animations, and designing shoes. I want to combine what makes me happy with technology and work for myself.

Hi Dallin! You're absolutely right about technology being the future. It's very interesting that you want to major in the very technical side of Computer Science and minor in the more flamboyant side of Graphic Design. I think you would have lots of options for a career path and as an entrepreneur if you're able to narrow down what it really is that you love to do (whether that be more on the programming end of things or more on the creative development of things) and what aspect of technology and design your strengths lie in.

You could look into a career path as a UI/UX Designer or Developer. Creating and developing Apps might be another path to look into. On a more creative path, you could design, produce and market your own product line (as you said, you like designing shoes) — look into Product Development. There are so many options for you if you want to take your love of creating video games and animation to develop your own specialized digital business. You can create websites from either the the computer/tech savvy side of things (wire framing, code, etc) or from the creative side and design the overall look and feel — you could do both with the degrees you want to pursue and work for yourself as a Freelance Designer or start your own business with your own employees. Also, don't feel that you have to target Graphic Design as a minor/major if it's more of the animated/gaming side of the arts. There are schools with programs out there that are more specialized for this side of design.

If you're interested and your goals lie in being an entrepreneur, I highly recommend business classes. In fact, you may want to consider Business as a minor and major in the Computer/Graphics/Visual side of things (or whichever side, tech savvy or creative, you enjoy most). You may be great with computers and design, however, you will need to be able to relate to, understand and have great communication skills to have clients, employees and work with other vendors.

I hope this information is useful to you and the kind of direction you're looking for. Best wishes and good luck in your pursuits!

Hey Dallin! Have you ever considered animation as a graduate degree? Many people with both art and computer science skills make great animators! With that degree, you could start a free-lance animation company that makes videos for trainings or commercials for businesses, etc.
