What should I do if I decide not to proceed with my job?

I am a 10th grader in high school and am wanting to get my associates degree. I am very indecisive about what kind of job I'm wanting to go into and wanting to pick the best job for me possible.

Hello, Claire !

I want to commend you on your aspirations of going to college as that is very important. I wouldn't be too worried about deciding a major right now if that is what's on your mind right now. My advice is to make the most of 10th, 11th and 12th grade and increase your activities and join groups and clubs that you have an interest in. Becoming an active participant with activities and volunteer work can give you insight as to what type of career you may want for the future. I think that by the time you graduate high school, you will have come up with one or two interests that you would like to pursue. Give it some time.

Two majors that come to my mind that can be valuable for a variety of jobs are a major in Business or Communication Studies (and yes, Computer Science, too !) . I have left a list of majors that are in demand at a link for you below. You should also be thinking about going on to obtaining a Bachelors Degree.

You can also go to college for a vocational degree if you want to aim for the two year Associates Degree and not a Bachelors Degree. I have left a link with more information about Vocational degrees. There are also specialized schools for things like film, cosmetology, aesthetician, etc. I would give yourself more time to explore and gain life experience. Most of all, you will want to choose a career that will be something you will love doing.

I hope that this was helpful and I wish you all the best !

Great question Claire!

The average college student changes their major 3 times.

The average worker changes their career 3-7 times.

I personally changed my major 3 times and have already changed my career path 2 times since being out of college for 5 years.

I hope this gives better perspective about choosing a career. It's hard and scary and confusing and exciting all in one! But know you are never stuck.

Personally, I have finally found a job & career I like after many trys.

My only other advice is when you are choosing a career (and with that what college education you get) make sure to be mindful of what the costs are with student loans (example - my friend wanted to be a pilot, went through all the training and realized that's the last thing he wanted to do. He accumulated a lot of debt when he should have kept exploring jobs).

Best of luck to you!
