How do you help your mental health with a high stress job?

Many people ignore the importance of self-care (tons of self-care article online).

A monk once asked me how my meditation goal of meditating once a day was going. I said that I had recently been too busy to follow through with my goal. His response? "Yes, when you're busy you shouldn't meditate once a day... You should meditate twice a day."

At the time, I laughed, but learned how true this was when I once tried to work two fulltime jobs at the same time for almost a year. To keep myself sane, I worked out more, ate healthier, meditate more, slept more, and made time for family. You'd think there wouldn't be enough time in a day for all that, but when you take care of yourself, you are more efficient. You do more with the time you have.

Stress tends to accumulate in your body, so it's essential to discover a method that effectively helps you to alleviate it. Personally, I find solace in jotting down my stressful thoughts on paper. This allows me to confront and acknowledge these thoughts. After pouring out all my worries on paper, I crumple it and throw it away! This simple act gives me a sense of purging my mind of clutter, akin to tidying up a disorganized room - the result is visually and emotionally satisfying!

Another excellent stress-busting strategy I would suggest is engaging in physical activities. Whether it's a leisurely walk, a bike ride, light weightlifting, using resistance bands, or even a quick stretch, any form of exercise can help you release bodily tension. It's an ideal way to "sweat out" your stress and rebalance your cortisol levels. Finish it off with a refreshing shower, and you'll feel rejuvenated, both inside and out!

I find joy in surfing, and I believe you can also find an activity that brings you happiness. No matter where you are, you can always find a gym to join, or even just go for a run. Better yet, take a leisurely walk every day, preferably somewhere surrounded by the beauty of nature. This can be incredibly beneficial. The key is to train yourself not to take things personally, and always remember that whatever is happening at this moment, whether it's good or bad, it's not going to last forever.

In addition to this, I find pleasure in immersing myself in the world of fiction.

After a while you realize that all the balls are made of glass, except for one - work. Work is a rubber ball, and if you drop it, it will bounce back. Putting things in perspective like this can help us understand where our main priorities are.

With that said, even if you maintain a good work-life balance and enjoy the work you do, it is important to take care of yourself. There are many things you can do, and it's important you figure out what works for you. Here are some suggestions:

- Spend time in nature. If you can, go on a hike or just take a stroll in the park. Just looking at the sky or leaves can promote relaxation.

- Do something that sparks joy. Read a good book, watch your favorite move, work on a hobby you like doing.

- Meditate. It doesn't have to be something complicated. Just find a quiet place where you can sit down for 5 minutes, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. There are a lot of meditation apps out there that can help you get started.

- Move. Again it's important to find what works for you. Some people enjoy running, for others, activities like yoga or stretching can be a better fit.

- Keep a gratitude journal. Sometimes in the midst of things we get bogged down by all the little things and to-dos, so pausing and appreciating the great things we have can anchor us and remind us that no matter how cloudy the day is, behind those clouds, there is always the blue sky.
