Hello Hannah!

Did you know that the typical starting salary for an interior designer in the United States is an impressive $68,688 annually? This amount, however, can fluctuate depending on elements like your level of experience, where you're based, and the unique skills you bring to the table.

Let's delve a bit deeper:

* For those with less than 1 year of experience, you can expect around $57,636 annually.
* With 1 to 2 years under your belt, you're looking at roughly $56,324 per year.
* And if you've been in the game for more than 10 years, the average salary jumps to a substantial $89,288 per year.

Remember, these numbers are just averages, and individual salaries can vary based on a range of factors. Plus, certain qualifications and abilities can significantly boost an interior designer's income. For example, holding a LEED Certification could potentially bump up your salary by a whopping 21.71%.

So, if you're contemplating a career in interior design, keep in mind that your income can steadily grow over time as you accumulate more experience and hone your skills!

Hello Hannah,

The starting pay for an interior designer can be influenced by several things like where you live, your education level, how much experience you have, and the size of the company you work for. But don't worry, I have some numbers to give you an idea! The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that the middle-of-the-road yearly pay for interior designers was $56,040 in May 2020. Just remember, this number includes all interior designers, from beginners to those with lots of experience.

Jonathan’s Answer

Your compensation as an interior designer reflects your value to a particular employer and therefore can vary accordingly. For example if you seek employment at a commercial interior design or architecture firm your starting salary as a junior/intern designer may be low due to your lack of experience and limited ability to contribute to the profitable delivery of projects. In contrast, a position as an in-house design consultant for a housing developer, or furniture dealership, or corporate real estate department may be more rewarding financially because your design skills/sensibility will enhance the sales of a product vs. design services being the product. Realize that there will be a significant difference in your development as a design professional however because working in a design firm as opposed to a furniture dealer or corporate real estate group will equip you with very different skills. Other key factors impacting compensation include:

-the quality of your design education ; a degree from a recognized, accredited design school has tangible value in the marketplace.
-because you don't have a body of completed work, your student design portfolio is extremely important as the key indicator of your design sensibilities; your portfolio is your most important design project; consider how you present, describe and organize your projects; research the best in class design portfolios and make sure your portfolio measures up.
-it's a fact of life that the compensation for design professionals is typically lower than other professions; your friends who studied law, medicine or business will make more in their first year than you will make after 10 years so you need to be prepared for that economic reality and the impact it will invariably have on your quality and level of life. If economic prosperity and financial security are important, choose a different profession.

Jonathan recommends the following next steps:

research the admissions requirements,, tuition, and design curriculums at the top colleges and universities and create a roadmap for your education as a design professional
engage with working design professionals and solicit their perspectives; learn from their experiences; develop rapport that may result in employment opportunities in their firms.
invest in student memberships with professional design organizations like the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and other organizations
