What does a day as an Urban and Community Studies major look like both in and out of college?

I was recently accepted into UConn as a Urban and Community Studies major and was wondering what this major entails. #college #urban-studies

Matthew’s Answer

Urban and Community Studies programs typically include courses in sociology, economics, law, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), land use and zoning, public speaking, conflict negotiation, and general planning courses with emphasis on historical context, urban design, landscape architecture, and civil engineering. As a student, you should pursue opportunities to intern with local government and/ or private sector firms to determine your areas of interest and gain on-the-job experience. As a professional in the public sector (government), you can expect to work closely with the public and land developers on both long-range community vision documents (master plans) and site-specific development applications for new buildings.
