How do I get started learning about technology?

Im in 10th grade. I am a beginner in this and open to taking summer classes. I think i would do better learning with a teacher/tutor rather watching videos on my own, but I will also try that, just wondering where I should start first!

Go to your local Barnes and Noble! Read a magazine about Raspberry Pi or Electronics and build one of the simple projects it lists. Other that, read books and magazines about web development and start playing with HTML and CSS. Those are 2 easy, gentle ways to get started. Good luck and have fun!

Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you have interest in technology. You can always start learning the programming yourself first. The teacher can help if you have any questions.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Identify a simple programming language to start first, e.g. Python, Scratch, etc. Find out the syntax and structure online. There are plenty of resources are online.
2. Start doing some simple programming yourself
3. After you familiarize the programming language, you can try to do some all projects ,e.g. toy car, robotic arm, etc.
4. If you have any question, you can ask the teacher in summer class
5. You can learn another programming language after familiarize one
If you really have interest in programming, I strongly recommend you to take Computer Science course in the college. It can give you an overview of computing theories and different skills on programming.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
May Almighty God bless you!

Hi Adrian!
Great question! So do you want to learn hardware or software or both? For online resources LinkedIn Learning provides some great tools for learning j-script, SQL and other languages.
After some online training, try coding yourself.

For hardware, tech schools can give you the hands on experience for learning routers, switches, computers, servers, etc. I still love building computers - it was one of the first classes I had for becoming a systems administrator (sys admin). That never gets old for me.

Finally, there is your local library. Books can be invaluable for learning the lingo. That way when you start with your practical experience you'll feel more confident as you'll have already heard these words before.

I am excited for you and wish you all the best!

Christopher’s Answer

Hi, there are lots of great (free) videos on sites like YouTube for various tech software - tech is a varied and diverse field so it may help narrowing down what interests you most, before you decide to focus in on particular aspects.

Local resources such as your local library may well provide access to both software and training, and there are online companies that provide training courses too (many of which are free).

One of the best ways to learn is by doing, so it can really help to have that extra hands on experience with a mentor / trainer, once you've identified specific software and tech.

Adrian, it's great to see your enthusiasm for technology at such an early age - it's a path that could lead to a rewarding career. Considering you're a beginner and prefer a structured learning approach, there are several steps you can take to dive into the tech world.

Start by checking out beginner-level computer science and programming courses on well-known online platforms like Coursera, edX, or Udemy. These sites offer courses tailored for beginners, taught by experienced teachers who can guide you. Look for courses that introduce key concepts like programming languages (Python or Java, for example), algorithms, data structures, and problem-solving methods.

Consider joining summer camps or workshops that focus on technology and computer science. Many universities and tech companies run summer programs for high school students interested in STEM. These programs usually offer practical learning experiences, mentorship, and exposure to real projects, which can significantly boost your tech knowledge and skills.

Since you prefer to learn with a teacher or tutor, think about local resources like coding clubs, community colleges, or private tutors specializing in tech education for beginners. One-on-one learning can provide personalized attention and guidance, making it easier for you to understand concepts and build a strong tech foundation.

Even if you prefer teacher-led learning, don't overlook the power of self-study resources. Online tutorials, coding exercises, and practice problems can complement classroom learning and let you learn at your own speed. Sites like Codecademy, LeetCode, and HackerRank offer loads of resources for beginners to practice coding and problem-solving.

As you progress in your learning, think about exploring specific tech areas that interest you, like web development, mobile app development, artificial intelligence, or cybersecurity. Focusing on a specific area can help you set clear skill development goals, leading to more meaningful and satisfying opportunities down the line.

In summary, there are many ways to start learning about technology, from online courses and summer programs to local workshops and private tutoring. By using these resources and staying committed to your learning goals, you can build a strong foundation for a successful tech career. I urge you to stay curious, keep trying, and never stop learning on this exciting journey.

Learning about computer programming is a good start and very practical skill set. Suggested programming languages are: JavaScript, Python, and Java. There are books and video tutorials, but an online course that is interactive would be very helpful. Especially as an introduction to programming, it is good to be able to ask questions and get guidance from a qualified instructor.
