Gloria, I appreciate your initiative in seeking advice about the top colleges in Maine for Architecture and Business studies. It's truly inspiring to witness your active involvement in exploring colleges that match your academic and career aspirations. As a college advisor for high school students, my role is to equip you with comprehensive information that will guide your decisions regarding your future education.

In the realm of architecture programs in Maine, the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) shines brightly. UMA offers a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program that is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). This accreditation guarantees the program's adherence to stringent academic and professional standards, thereby preparing students for thriving careers in architecture. UMA's curriculum is designed to provide a holistic education in architectural theory, history, and practice, with a strong emphasis on practical learning, design studios, and technical skills enhancement.

On the other hand, the University of Maine in Orono (UMaine) provides a Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSArch) program within its College of Engineering. Although this program doesn't possess NAAB accreditation at the undergraduate level, it lays a robust foundation in architectural design, construction, and technology. UMaine's program also underscores the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation, which are crucial considerations in contemporary architectural practice.

As for business programs, the University of Southern Maine (USM) is a standout choice due to its wide-ranging offerings and esteemed reputation in business education. USM's School of Business provides an array of undergraduate and graduate programs, including majors in accounting, finance, marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. The business programs at USM are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a prestigious accreditation that symbolizes excellence in business education.

Moreover, Husson University, situated in Bangor, Maine, is renowned for its commendable business programs. Husson's College of Business offers an extensive selection of undergraduate and graduate degrees, along with certificate programs, in disciplines such as business administration, hospitality management, healthcare management, and more. Husson's business programs focus on experiential learning, professional development, and industry connections, equipping students with practical skills and networking opportunities to excel in their chosen fields.

In the end, the best college for architecture or business in Maine will hinge on your unique academic interests, career objectives, and personal preferences. I encourage you to conduct thorough research on each institution, visit campuses if feasible, and engage with current students, faculty members, and alumni to gain deeper insights into the academic programs, campus life, and career prospects. Additionally, consider aspects such as location, campus facilities, internship opportunities, and extracurricular activities when making your decision.

Martha’s Answer

Hi, Gloria, please doublecheck with your guidance counselor, but there appears to be only one institution in Maine that offers an architecture degree, the University of Maine at Augusta (see link below). However, through the Tuition Break program (see link below), you could pay significantly less than the regular out-of-state tuition rate at public institutions in neighboring states. This greatly expands your choices.
As for business, the University of Maine at Orono seems to be the best in the state. As you look at programs, be sure you are looking at undergraduate programs. If you find a program you like in a neighboring state (as far south as Connecticut), remember that the Tuition Break program may be available to you.
Good luck!
