What can I do during my undergrad to ensure my spot in a DPT program?

I would like to make sure I show the admissions committee of a DPT program that I'm deeply passionate about becoming a Pediatric Physical Therapist. #KinesiologyPre-PT

Hello Jene!

Starting to think about graduate school when you are still in your undergraduate studies is very important. I would say get involved in a lot of various clubs, activities, job shadowing. As you should think about things that apply to pediatric physical therapy, it is good to also do other things. Don't try and do too many things because then it can look as if you are not truly invested in the extracurricular activities in which you are involved in. Instead, focus on being established in a few. Consider becoming an officer in a club, take on different roles, and/or create a new even for your club.

Try and be diverse and include variety within your activities. It will be good not only for you to expand your knowledge, but also look good to the graduate school to continuously job shadow a pediatric physical therapist to see their job duties and learn more about the position. Then choose something to be apart of that is a hobby of yours. If you like sports, join an intramural team and perhaps become captain. You can look into joining a sorority and get involved with different volunteer opportunities. Also, don't be afraid to include socializing as some graduate schools include interviews and workshops to see how applicants interact with others.

Also, keep in mind you will most likely have to have letters of recommendations in order to apply and be accepted. Being involved in the previously mentioned activities could provide letters of recommendations from supervisors, colleagues, and peers but schools will also ask for academic letters of recommendations. Ask questions in class and meet with professors or teaching assistants when available. Not only will this help you in class, but it will also show your instructor you are interested and responsible.

Overall, this may sound like a lot to be involved in, but it doesn't have to be. If you choose to job shadow, maybe only do it once a week. Meeting and events for clubs usually happen once a month. Don't worry about doing everything all at once, as grades are still important for graduate school and you don't want these to be effected be taking on too much. Manage your activities and time from semester to semester based on what you are doing and it will all work out! Good luck and I hope the best for you!

Whitney recommends the following next steps:

Look up nearby pediatric physical therapists and contact them to see if you could meet
Visit a student affairs center at your college and see what there is to get involved
Continue to improve study habits and manage time
