Teaching abroad is a wonderful experience! I suggests asking yourself "how will this fit into my plan long term." Are you interested in teaching? Do you want to learn more about the Japanese education system and possibly stay there long term?

If this fits into your long term plan it may be worth taking a salary that is less desirable.

You may also want to look into the employment laws in Japan to find out if you could use your visa to do other kinds of work to supplement your income.

Jasmin,

Teaching English abroad seems to be growing as a popular experience after college or during student's summers. There are lots of opportunities out there. In most cases the country will require you to have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certification, some do not require it (the TEFL). There are multiple sites offering this certificate along with the necessary courses you have to take, but be careful of scams. Most of the real sites provide opportunities for people once they have completed the certification. I would suggest you start by looking into some of the sites, Japan is just one of the many countries looking for native English speakers to teach English.

I believe that the demand for English speaking teachers from America is rising. But I understand your concerns about pay. I am not entirely sure what pay is like over there; however, the cost of living is significantly smaller than that of America. So, even if you are not being payed a lot, you should make enough money to live over there pretty securely. Hope this helps!
