It just depends on what line of hvac you go into. Residential hvac techs usually are on call in rotating shifts commercial like me have different shifts with different techs at a singular facility.

It depends on what area of the country you work and the weather. In the southern states, you will work a lot more in the summer than the winter as the A/C is really needed there. In the northern states, heating is critical for them, so as I said it's dependent on the weather and where you work.

It's highly dependent on the type of HVAC tech you are and the sector of the industry you're in. A large portion of this industry doesn't work on set hours. 8hrs is the base but days can run long for service techs with little notice. It's not unheard of in peak seasons to hit 50-80hrs in a week especially if your on call. Some sectors of the industry are more structured and 8hrs and going home is possible even in the peak seasons.

HVAC workers, those wizards of warmth and coolness, find their days filled to the brim, especially when the seasons turn capricious. Their dance with time isn't set to a strict rhythm. Instead, it ebbs and flows with the weather, the type of hustle (be it under a company's banner, flying solo, or navigating the contractor life), and where they've planted their boots on the map. A standard week? That's about 40 hours on the clock, give or take. But let the mercury climb or plummet, and watch those hours stretch. Peak seasons have them clocking in more, sometimes hitting the 50-60 hour mark. And then there are the moments when comfort crises strike at odd hours - evenings, weekends - beckoning them to the rescue. It's a life of readiness, of bending time to meet comfort's call.

Jacob’s Answer

This is a big question because there’s a lot of different sides to HVAC. Just to name some of the core ones: Service, Install, Sales, and Counter Sales are some of them.

Counter sales has bits of retail selling in them but you also need to have some knowledge of the parts, refrigerant, and equipment you are selling. Hours for this can vary but most likely going to be 8 hour days or 40 hours a week.

If you are in Sales you typically have a range of HVAC knowledge and quotes to give estimates and quotes regarding new HVAC equipment customers might be interested in purchasing for their homes or business. This job typically works during whatever the business hours of the HVAC company you are working for. Sometimes if you have special request from clients you might be able to go at different times but this is typically true for most companies, I would be expecting 40 to 45 hours for this and it’s usually commission based as well.

As a service tech you go out to your clients homes or businesses to fix, repair, or perform preventative maintenance on their equipment. This kind of work is done during normal business hours of your HVAC company as well as an on call service for emergencies that some HVAC companies offer. This portion of the field is also drastically affected by the weather in the area you live and season of the year. During cold winters especially but also hot summers, you could expect anywhere from 40 to 70 most likely. On the other seasons or during periods of moderate weather especially, your hours may possibly dwindle to something like 30 to 40 even.

In Install you go to a clients house or business to install some form of HVAC equipment. This portion of the industry will almost always work the minimum of the business hours of the HVAC company you work for. However, there are sometimes deadlines that have to be met and to finish on time you may have to stay over on some days making 10 to 12 hour days not so uncommon. I’d say a good medium in what you would work is most likely 40 to 55 hours a week.

I would like reiterate the fact that this is just a rural estimate of what you may experience regarding work hours. Some companies have different policies or different business hours than others. As well as this, the size of a company can make a difference in hours as well such as the number of clients they service or the number of employees they have as well. With that being said, I hope my answer helps shed some light on the hours you may be looking at in HVAC.

We would usually work 8 hours a day.. However we have been working for this property managment company for 6 years.. and it's up to us how many hours we work as long as we get enough work done. We do have to turn proof of completed work by the end of the pay period.
