Becoming a pediatric nurse can be incredibly rewarding for several reasons:

1. **Love for Children:** If you have a passion for working with children and enjoy their company, pediatric nursing allows you to spend your days caring for them.

2. **Making a Difference:** Helping children heal from illnesses, injuries, or surgeries, and supporting their families through difficult times can be immensely gratifying.

3. **Long-Term Impact:** Working with children allows you to make a significant impact on their health and well-being, potentially influencing their lives positively for years to come.

4. **Variety in Work:** Pediatric nursing offers a diverse range of experiences, from routine check-ups to emergency care, ensuring that each day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn.

5. **Emotional Fulfillment:** Witnessing children recover and grow stronger under your care can provide a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose in your work.

6. **Building Relationships:** You get to build strong relationships not only with the children you care for but also with their families, providing support and guidance throughout their healthcare journey.

7. **Continuous Learning:** Pediatrics is a dynamic field that continually evolves with new treatments, technologies, and research, allowing you to engage in lifelong learning and professional growth.

Cheryl’s Answer

Oddly enough, when I decided to be a nurse, I was going to be an adult nurse because I didn’t think I could watch a child die. Then life happened. My first job as a nurse aid was at pediatric skilled nursing facility for children and adults with developmental disabilities as well as being medically fragile. I started on a Friday on 3-11 shift. I cried all the way home, but I went back. My second night there a child almost died and I was the one who found her. The third night I was there, I was on my own with 8 little ones to take care of. I cried and on the way home I said “Lord, if you want me to do this, tell me how. He responded “Just love them!” And that’s what I did for 45 years. I stayed at the facility through nursing school and became a medication aid, then a student nurse. They like me there and offered me my first nursing job. So that’s how I became a pediatric nurse. I believe it was my mission, and I got to do my mission every day for 45 years

Cheryl recommends the following next steps:

I suggest you call a local hospital and see if they have a shadow program where you could follow a pediatric nurse around for a day.
You might also see if there is a child life program with which you could volunteer
Keep your heart and mind open and allow your experienced to pick your specialty.
