How do I build my profile?
I'm a 10th grader studying in a village in a third world country. I am currently studying for my O levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and English. I want to know how I can build my profile through online options. What activities can I commit to during high school so colleges seriously consider me? I don't have any extracurricular options at my school and working at local stores or hospitals isn't an option so it has to be online. Volunteering options don't exist here either.

I would like to help you for your inquiry. By building your profile, do you mean how could you gain experience ? That's great because there are online volunteer opportunities for you and I have left links to them below.
There may be some in person volunteer work that you possibly can initiate, too. Something like a neighborhood beautification program that you can start with a friend or a couple of interested people to do whatever needs to be done to make the sidewalks look attended. Any work that you do paid or unpaid will build your resume. There is an organization which is registered in Pakistan called Community World Service Asia. It sounds like such a wonderful opportunity to seek out either paid employment with or volunteer work. You can discover them at their website:
COMMUNITY WORLD SERVICE ASIA https://communityworldservice.asia/
Something that you may think about for creating a volunteer activity for yourself is to find out what is needed in your community. Elderly people may need assistance with paperwork or small errands and chores that you could help out with. If you go to the Edhi Foundation at THE EDHI FOUNDATION website https://edhi.org/ you may be able to obtain volunteer work with them. Inquire about any online opportunities if that's what you prefer. You can also try the SHAUKAT KHNUM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTER at https://shaukatkhanum.org.pk/ because there are in person volunteer opportunities there.
There are so very many places to explore for both online and in person volunteer work and I wish you all the best with finding exactly what you want. It does take a lot of reading and inquiring at the various places so you will have to prepare yourself to make those connections.

Building Your Profile as a 10th Grader in a Third World Country
Building a strong profile for college applications is essential, especially when you have limited access to traditional extracurricular activities. However, there are numerous online options available that can help you enhance your profile and demonstrate your commitment to personal growth and community service. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to build your profile effectively.
1. Online Courses and Certifications
One of the best ways to build your academic profile is through online courses. Websites like Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy offer free or low-cost courses in various subjects, including advanced topics in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, and English. Completing these courses not only deepens your knowledge but also shows colleges that you are proactive about your education.
Action Steps:
Identify subjects that interest you or align with your future career goals.
Enroll in relevant courses and aim for completion certificates.
2. Participate in Online Competitions
Many organizations host online competitions in science, mathematics, writing, and other fields. Participating in these competitions can showcase your skills and dedication.
Examples of Competitions:
Science fairs (virtual)
Math Olympiads
Writing contests (short stories, essays)
Action Steps:
Research upcoming competitions on platforms like Science Buddies or Math Olympiad.
Prepare thoroughly and submit entries before deadlines.
3. Engage in Virtual Volunteering
Although local volunteering may not be an option for you, many organizations offer virtual volunteering opportunities where you can contribute from home. This could involve tutoring younger students online or helping with administrative tasks for non-profits.
Platforms to Explore:
UN Volunteers
Idealist
Action Steps:
Search for virtual volunteer opportunities that match your interests.
Dedicate a few hours each week to these activities.
4. Build an Online Portfolio
Creating an online portfolio can help showcase your work and achievements. You can use platforms like WordPress or Wix to create a simple website where you display projects from online courses, competition entries, or any creative work (like writing).
Action Steps:
Choose a platform and design a simple layout.
Regularly update it with new projects or accomplishments.
5. Join Online Communities and Forums
Engaging with peers who share similar interests can be beneficial. Platforms like Reddit or specialized forums related to science or education allow you to ask questions, share knowledge, and network with others globally.
Action Steps:
Find relevant subreddits (e.g., r/learnscience) or forums.
Participate actively by asking questions and contributing answers.
6. Develop Skills Through Online Workshops
Look for workshops that focus on skills such as coding (Python is highly recommended), public speaking, or creative writing. These skills are valuable in many fields of study and can set you apart from other applicants.
Platforms Offering Workshops:
Skillshare
Udemy
Action Steps:
Enroll in workshops that interest you.
Apply what you learn through projects or presentations.
7. Document Your Journey
Keep track of all the activities you engage in—courses completed, competitions entered, volunteer hours logged—so that when it comes time to apply for colleges, you have a comprehensive record of your efforts.
Action Steps:
Create a spreadsheet or document summarizing all activities.
By following these steps diligently over the next few years of high school, you’ll be able to build a robust profile that reflects both academic prowess and personal initiative despite the limitations of your local environment.

I want to give a slightly different perspective. Should you seek opportunities to help others in your own community and possibly remotely? Yes, but not just for college applications. Each of us doing our part helps make the world a better place, and research shows that the giver benefits along with the recipient. Also, college admissions officers receive information from your school about its offerings and the surrounding community. So they will take that into account as they review your application. Your unusual background may be attractive to them as you may bring a different perspective to classes and late-night dorm discussions. Consider this as you think about possible personal essay topics.
Good luck!
