How do I build my profile?

I'm a 10th grader studying in a village in a third world country. I am currently studying for my O levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and English. I want to know how I can build my profile through online options. What activities can I commit to during high school so colleges seriously consider me? I don't have any extracurricular options at my school and working at local stores or hospitals isn't an option so it has to be online. Volunteering options don't exist here either.

Hello, Mahnoor !

I would like to help you for your inquiry. By building your profile, do you mean how could you gain experience ? That's great because there are online volunteer opportunities for you and I have left links to them below.

There may be some in person volunteer work that you possibly can initiate, too. Something like a neighborhood beautification program that you can start with a friend or a couple of interested people to do whatever needs to be done to make the sidewalks look attended. Any work that you do paid or unpaid will build your resume. There is an organization which is registered in Pakistan called Community World Service Asia. It sounds like such a wonderful opportunity to seek out either paid employment with or volunteer work. You can discover them at their website:
COMMUNITY WORLD SERVICE ASIA https://communityworldservice.asia/

Something that you may think about for creating a volunteer activity for yourself is to find out what is needed in your community. Elderly people may need assistance with paperwork or small errands and chores that you could help out with. If you go to the Edhi Foundation at THE EDHI FOUNDATION website https://edhi.org/ you may be able to obtain volunteer work with them. Inquire about any online opportunities if that's what you prefer. You can also try the SHAUKAT KHNUM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTER at https://shaukatkhanum.org.pk/ because there are in person volunteer opportunities there.

There are so very many places to explore for both online and in person volunteer work and I wish you all the best with finding exactly what you want. It does take a lot of reading and inquiring at the various places so you will have to prepare yourself to make those connections.

As someone who also came from a developing country and pursued my education abroad, I can tell you that colleges value resilience and resourcefulness. The fact that you're so proactive about building your profile despite limitations speaks volumes about your dedication.

Focus on showcasing your academic strengths, intellectual curiosity, and ability to learn independently. These online options will help you stand out, and colleges will appreciate your drive to succeed.

Here's how you can leverage online options:

- Online Courses and Certifications:

Platforms like [Coursera] or [edX] offer free and paid courses from top universities. Take courses related to your O Levels or explore areas of interest like computer science, data analysis, etc. Completing these demonstrates initiative and a hunger for knowledge.

Look for MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that offer certifications upon completion. These can add value to your profile, especially if relevant to your desired field of study.

- Online Competitions and Projects:

Participate in online science fairs, coding competitions, or writing contests. There are many international platforms that host such events. Winning or placing high showcases your talent and competitive spirit.

Find online project-based learning opportunities. There might be research institutions or universities that offer collaborative projects where you can contribute remotely.

- Building an Online Presence:

Create a professional online presence. Build a website or blog (free options are available) where you can document your learning journey, showcase your projects, or even write about your experiences as a student in a developing country. This establishes your voice and demonstrates your passion for learning.

Consider social media platforms like LinkedIn (tailored for professionals) or even a moderated public Facebook page (focused on academics and achievements). Share your learnings, project updates, or even educational articles you find interesting.

Good luck, a bright future is ahead!

It's great to hear that you're thinking about building your profile for college despite the challenges you're facing. There are several online options you can explore to enhance your profile. You can consider participating in online courses, competitions, or projects related to your field of interest. Additionally, you could start a blog or YouTube channel to share your knowledge and experiences. Online tutoring or mentoring younger students in your area of expertise could also be a valuable contribution. Lastly, if possible, you can try to participate in online forums or communities related to science, mathematics, or other subjects you're passionate about. These activities can demonstrate your dedication and passion to colleges, even without traditional extracurricular options.

Hi, Mahnoor, I join Michelle and Victory in commending you for thinking about this so early in your high school career, and they have given you excellent advice and resources.

I want to give a slightly different perspective. Should you seek opportunities to help others in your own community and possibly remotely? Yes, but not just for college applications. Each of us doing our part helps make the world a better place, and research shows that the giver benefits along with the recipient. Also, college admissions officers receive information from your school about its offerings and the surrounding community. So they will take that into account as they review your application. Your unusual background may be attractive to them as you may bring a different perspective to classes and late-night dorm discussions. Consider this as you think about possible personal essay topics.

Good luck!
