Linda’s Answer

This very much depends on the type of business you want to pursue and how you want it housed, in a commercial space or inner net. Location is key. Once you figure this out you have to get paperwork organized. You need a name for the business and in most cases a commercial license to do business in your location. Sales tax ID number you must acquire so you can collect and pay taxes, your local city hall will house the sales tax department in most cases or apply on line. Paperwork in order, now lease commercials space or design web page. A commercial space will need furnishings and inventory purchased or constructed either depending on your venture. Collect whatever merchandise you intend to offer for purchase, good or services and purchase appropriate display racks, tables, and any appraises nessarry to showcase your brand. Add a logo of your own custom colored for signage to promote your business both online or retail space. You should really consider this intently for a logo will need to be memorable and timeless. If you don't have a rich old aunt supporting your business interests you will need to secure a loan with contralateral or a business partner with deep pockets, this aspect of starting a business is always a make or break but if you are determined and reach way down inside yourself for the strength that is there and light the fire in your belly you can overcome all the obstacles you will encounter. If you believe in you someone else will too. You must find them and it will not be easy nothing worth working really hard for is easy if it was everyone would do it. Keep this in mind and don't get discouraged. You will have set backs and disappointment as you learn what it takes to become great at being you. There are places where you can rent a booth for a small fee a practice with real customers and make a little money maybe a lot depending on your offering. Be present and have integrity, work hard ,stay positive, be wise with your money most of all have fun, enjoy what you do. Good luck I am keeping fingers crossed for you!

Lisa’s Answer

Great question as it can be overwhelming to begin any new venture! In terms of beginning a visual arts career, the most important advise I can offer is to draw - A LOT! Through a daily drawing practice you will develop your style, your preferences and find what you like to do. In addition, share your journey with others in whatever way is most comfortable with you. Your audience will tell you what resonates and what you can press into to further develop.
Once you feel like you re getting some traction, you can create a portfolio to pitch to illustrator agents, licensing agents, galleries. You can also sell your artwork through print on demand sites, do commission works and sell in your own online marketplace.
Getting started can be overwhelming - start with one step and just keep walking forward!!!

Lisa recommends the following next steps:

Draw a lot.
Find your niche- online presence.
Create a portfolio.
Pitch.
Create an online marketplace.

Meg’s Answer

A good way to begin your career is to cultivate joy from the work you want to do. Don't underestimate doing art and design work for fun in your free time. Building a positive relationship with the arts and artistic hobbies will help you focus in the future. It also means you can find out what you truly like to do. Good luck :)

Meg recommends the following next steps:

Do some fun tasks related to the career you want to try (such as doing drawing studies on your own - (practice drawing human portraits, gestures of horses, etc, for example)
Consider some free art & design classes from youtube or other sources
When you are confident in your career choice, build a community with peers with similar ambitions, they will be your network & emotional support
Optionally: pursue paid classes, workshops, and higher education (college)
