Hello Eve,
This is a great question!
Career coaching is a professional service where individuals get assistance from a coach to explore their career options, set career goals, overcome obstacles, and make career changes. The coach uses a variety of tools and techniques to help individuals understand their strengths, weaknesses, interests, and values, and how these can be applied in their career development.
To be a successful career coach, you would need the following skills:
Active Listening: This is essential to understand your client's needs and aspirations.
Communication: You need to be able to communicate effectively and clearly to help your clients understand their options and the steps they need to take.
Empathy: You should be able to empathize with your clients' situations and understand their feelings and emotions.
Problem-Solving: You should be able to help your clients identify and overcome obstacles that are hindering their career progress.
Motivational Skills: You should be able to inspire and motivate your clients to take the necessary steps towards achieving their career goals.
Knowledge of Career Development Theories and Techniques: You need to be familiar with various career development theories and techniques to provide effective guidance.
Confidentiality: You must maintain a high degree of confidentiality as you will be dealing with sensitive information.
Patience and Flexibility: Career changes don't happen overnight. You should be patient and flexible to accommodate the pace of your clients.
Business Acumen: If you are self-employed, you need to have business skills for marketing your services, managing your finances, and growing your client base.
Continual Learning: The job market and industry trends change frequently. You need to stay updated to provide relevant advice to your clients.
In addition to these skills, having a certification from a recognized coaching organization can enhance your credibility and effectiveness as a career coach.
I hope this helps!

Career coaching is about getting guidance, advise or information about your career. You can get this from a person you look up to as your career role model, from a volunteer group. In the work setting there’s usually a mentoring & coaching team that you can join.
