Hi Emi!

I am so happy you are interested in psychology and you are already looking into options to further your education! Your high school often depends on the district you live in. If your address falls within a district you wish to not attend, you can look into options such as private schools. However, I am going to answer this question as if you are going to attend your local public school. High schools often offer Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and other college-credit courses in partnership with universities. Some high schools have partnerships with local colleges or universities that allow students to take college-level courses while still in high school. Look into whether there are any psychology courses available through these programs.

AP courses, or Advanced Placement courses, are college-level classes offered in high school that follow a standardized curriculum set by the College Board. Students who take AP courses have the opportunity to earn college credit by passing the corresponding AP exam at the end of the year. IB courses, or International Baccalaureate courses, are part of the International Baccalaureate program, which offers a rigorous, internationally recognized curriculum for high school students. IB courses cover a wide range of subjects and typically culminate in the completion of the IB Diploma Programme. IB courses also allow the opportunity to earn college credit. Dual-enrollment courses allow high school students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit by taking courses at a college or university while still enrolled in high school. These courses provide students with the opportunity to experience college-level coursework and earn credits that can be transferred to a college or university.

You should be able to find which courses your high school offers on their website. Don't be afraid to reach out to your school counselor! They will be able to provide you with what courses are offered at your high school. If your high school does not offer AP Psychology (or other psychology courses), they should be able to help you explore options with local community colleges. Also, the American Psychology Association offers resources for high school students who are interested in pursuing this career! I'll attach the link below.

Hello, Emi !

You have asked a fantastic question because this information has not yet been formulated on the internet !

Your state of Maryland has 497 high schools in total, including both public and private schools. It's not a question of finding out WHICH high schools offer a certain class, such as psychology, but whether or not you have a choice to choose your high school. Most high schools are within a district, so check with your parents about if you can choose a private school, if not ask which public high school(s) you might have to attend due to where you live.

Once you find out if you have a choice and can choose your high school, you will need to phone as many schools as you want to ask directly if they offer psychology. You can go to each school's website to see if they list every class they offer as I know some high school websites do this. I've left a link for you below to a list of your local high schools. I've also left a link below for a list of public schools, magnet schools and special schools in your area. So once you know which high school you will be going to, you can find out from the school if they offer Psychology classes. If you find that you're not going to be offered Psychology in whichever high school you attend, you can look into dual enrollment at a local community college at which you can take Psychology or take online Psychology courses. To get you started, I have left a link below for free online Psychology courses that you can consider. You could find many more courses by doing a search on the internet.

I hope that this is helpful and I wish you all the best !

As others have mentioned, if your high school doesn't offer psychology classes you can look online and/or at nearby community colleges. Tons of options outside of what your specific high school may provide, so if your high school doesn't have psychology classes, don't let that discourage you from something you're interested in!

Here are some resources that can help you find online psych courses (and these resources aren't just for NY state students):

Hi Emi!

Start by talking to your college guidance counselor. If your school doesn't offer a psychology course you could see if there is a dual credit opportunity for you to go to a community college and take a psychology class, a virtual opportunity or if there's any summer camps that you could attend.

The internet is a wonderful resource. I loved psychology crash course on youtube. Crash course has some courses led by John Green (the author of The Fault in our stars) and his brother Hank Green. The vids do a great job of touching on many topics covered in an AP psychology class and references well known studies.

Let us know how it goes!
