The best thing about computer science and programming is that you can get started today. There are tons of free online resources from freecodecamp.org or even directly on the websites for popular programming languages like python. You can find youtube videos with tutorials on programming too. Go through one of those free courses and you'll start your journey.

I've always found it helpful to focus on making something while you're learning so that you'll think about how the things that you're learning can be applied to a real problem. Solving problems is a major facet of a career in software and solving problems that you care about will make the difficult parts easier because you'll be able to focus on the goal of solving your problem. One of the best things you can do early on which I regret not doing in high school is doing research on certifications required by many IT related job postings. CompTIA is a great starter certification path. Particularly the A+ certification. If you have the ability to dedicate the time to taking this exam early on, it will help you understand the fundamentals of computers and troubleshooting which will make your career progression slightly less challenging. Considering this is a basic or entry level certification for many IT related jobs, I'd highly recommend at the very least, studying the current textbook regardless of whether you plan to get certified or not.
