Aside from the high pay, what is the appeal of Computer Science?
I am a college student at Hofstra University. I'm a Computer Science major and am currently a college sophomore.

My favorite part about working in software is that the problems/challenges/etc. are difficult. Solving highly complex problems can be very rewarding, and the impact is typically very high as well. You can make a large difference with just a little bit of code.

The appeal primarily revolved around good pay and flexible work conditions. My company excels in maintaining work-life balance compared to many others. It allows me to work while traveling, switch roles, undertake training, or volunteer, all of which are encouraged. However, it ultimately depends on your interest in technology. If your work tasks aren't engaging or enjoyable, you'll need to seek out something that is. Keep in mind, it's just a job. The real fun awaits during weekends and vacations. So, aim for a job that not only funds your leisure but also provides comfort and entertainment.

Even simple actions can significantly improve someone's life, making it more manageable and straightforward. For me, it's all about being on the cutting edge. If you work at a mature industry, say financial services, the business leaders will be focused on the bottom line, and pretty much nothing else. It's harder to grow in your role and responsibilities in this structure.
I recommend you get into technology because the industry is leading the world - disrupting these mature industries with tools and tactics to grow faster and be more efficient. AND you will get exposure to many different fields because everyone is investing in technology. Hope you go for it!

You could say I work in IT/Computer Science; I am an instructional designer and technical writer. Although I don’t program or code in the strictest sense, I do create using a variety of computer programs such as Storyline, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and others.
For me, they way computer and IT work stands out, is that almost every company has a need for various kinds of computer and technology experts, these are skills you can take almost anywhere. During my time as an instructional designer I have worked for an airline, a university, a food and drink company, and a hardware/software manufacturer.
If, for example, you were an aircraft mechanic, you would look for jobs where employers needed aircraft mechanics such as airlines. If you were a musician, you would work where musicians were needed. I am not saying anything negative about aircraft mechanics or musicians, individuals skilled in these things can find ample opportunities for long fruitful careers. What I am saying is that IT is one of those jobs that you can perform for almost any company in any industry.
Other examples of this type of job are human resources, accounting, or legal, among others.

Great question for everyone ! My first thought about this is that you could probably answer this question better than I could, but I am happy to contribute some thoughts and a sprinkling of advice for you to think about and see how it fits into your outlook.
For the past, I'd say, 25 years or so, we've embraced the computer technology age in which having a computer is as common as having a phone or a television. It became another useful device in the home and made some things fun, easier and convenient for people. That's an appeal in itself. Like with any invention that becomes part of every day life, it has it's appeal and it's misuse, too. That goes for everything, though.
The advances in medical care are astounding. That one can actually see the insides of their body during a medical exam is beyond what our ancestors could even imagine. Besides amazing, it assists greatly with detecting health problems that need attention, sometimes immediately.
The development of Computer Generated Imagery for the film industry is another advancement that computer science has contributed to. Have you seen "Titanic" ? Many of the background extras were CGI and you can see this in many other films as well. Even though I prefer old school crafted animation technique, CGI has made it possible to create film and TV that would previously be more expensive and time consuming.
If that isn't enough of an appeal, what about people who hate to shop. Computer science has made it possible to cut shopping time down to a minimum and being able to shop in the comfort of your own home. Also the way technology has contributed to making it fast and easy to stay in touch with far away family and friends through e-mail, instant messaging, video conferencing and social media. These are just some of the elements that grabbed a customer base worldwide because of computer science.
Another benefit of pursuing a career in computer science is the versatility of it. It's a constant learning experience, always something new coming about and you can take your career in any direction you choose - even starting your own business. So going into computer science is pretty stable and covers a wide range of career choices.
I would encourage you to stick with it and take advantage of every opportunity that Hofstra has to offer. Keep learning and you will find your niche in this career !

The appeal of Computer Science is different for each person. I've been in IT for more than 40 years and I still love it. My degree is in Mathematics, so I'm less of a computer scientist, but the skills brought to the work are essentially the same.
I've worked in corporations as a programmer (software engineer), business analyst, systems engineer, data modeler, inter-application architect, tester, project lead, and my current role as a scrum master. This experience is a testament to the fact that a degree in computer science can open doors to a rich and varied professional life.
If you're the type of person that likes to change the nature of the work you do every few years, careers that require computer science skills, are a great choice. Conversely, if you want to focus on one area, like programming, for the majority of your career, that is a path many people take. Within that scope there is room for growth. You can expand your knowledge and use of CI/CD tools and practices, automated testing, becoming a project lead, and much more.
In summary, the appeal is doing something you enjoy or love in a way that is flexible, and as you said, you get paid well too.

It's a really exciting time to work in computer science/technology. From self-driving cars to AI that is redefining how we will engage with machines, there is a whole range of fascinating problems to solve.
