Hi. Congratulations on wanting to go to cosmetology school. I actually just gave a talk about managing stress and creating natural daily rituals while attending class to our local vocational school students in cosmo. My family had beauty salons and spa services at our other business centering around wellness in the past. So I’ve been around it much of my life.
I currently get my hair done at the vocational school and the air ventilation seems to be pretty good. I’m very sensitive to smells but as a client I’ve been able to tolerate being in the student salon.
Hair dryers can be noisy sometimes but I do think they are quieter than in the past. I can’t imagine burning smells unless a curling iron got too hot.
Nail polish and perm solution does have an odor. But I do think student salons are trying to use more earth friendly products whenever possible.
I suggested to the students to wear semi precious stone jewelry or carry pocket stones in the smock or pants to help keep them grounded and calm if they’re anxious. In a salon environment clients like to engage in conversation with the students and talk about life or ask you questions. Grounding stones can help you feel more at peace.
Practicing energy arts like Qigong can also help you stay focused in class. You can put a protective bubble around yourself energetically. I would look it up online if you’re interested . Meditation is an excellent way to prepare yourself for the day or to unwind after a day of school.
There are many areas of cosmology that you can focus on once you complete your training. See where you find yourself leaning in. Maybe it’s cutting or color. Possibly skin care and makeup. Even stage makeup.
The students at our local cosmo and barber school volunteer as part of the class required hours. They cut hair for veterans and do nails for senior citizens. It’s a great way to gain experience and give back to the community.
See if you can tour a local beauty salon, day spa or barber shop. Maybe you could intern there booking appointments, washing towels or cleaning combs and such. See if you enjoy the atmosphere before committing to school.
Many cosmologists get licensed to do skin care. Others become massage therapists. The beauty and wellness industry is ever expanding with new products, services and modalities.
You could do bridal party hair and makeup, work in a hotel or on a cruise. You could do something in the film industry, theater or theme park. The possibilities are endless.
I’d consider watching videos online, learning techniques and maybe practicing on family and friends to see if it’s a good fit for you.
Best of luck in your future endeavors.

The only loud noise would be blow dryers and people talking. Weird smells might be hair products and hair color. There shouldn’t be any burning smells. This is a very social career so be prepared to be friendly and make small talk. It’s a very fun and rewarding career! Good luck!
Thank you for the advice, Mindy.
