What will help me stand out on direct-nursing admissions?

Hi, I’m currently a junior who is planning on applying to direct-nursing schools. I was wondering what would look best on my applications and help me stand out. I’m taking classes leaning towards the medical field like: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, ap biology, and CNA. I’ve also applied for volunteering over the summer in hospitals. #Spring24

Fantastic work, Alicja! You're steadily advancing towards enrollment in a direct MSN nursing program. As someone who has guided graduate students at Rush University College of Nursing, I can tell you that practical experience in a hospital or clinic is highly valued. Acquiring your Certified Nurse Assistant certification is a brilliant move, and I hope you'll be able to secure a summer job in this field. Being a CNA distinguishes you from a lot of other students. If employment isn't feasible, volunteering is another excellent way to stand out. I personally dedicated four years of my high school life to volunteering every Sunday in an inpatient surgical unit, accumulating over 1000 hours of volunteer time. Your coursework is absolutely a positive stride. Keep up the good work!
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much! That’s really encouraging to hear that I’m on the right track. Thank you for the advice, I’ll be sure to keep it in mind. Alicja

Thank you comment icon Alicja, you’re very welcome. Good luck on your trek in nursing. After 44 years in nursing, I have been an emergency nurse, an ICU nurse, a charge nurse, a preceptor to new nurses, an Assistant Clinical Manager, a Clinical Manager, an assistant professor in nursing, and now a nurse practitioner for 24 years. You will never be bored! It’s a satisfying career. You will always have money as you can find a job in any state or country. You can see the world. One piece of advice I will give you, Always find time for yourself and take care of yourself first and foremost. Enjoy the ride too, it’s ½ the fun. 😊 Maureen Komperda
