Hey Fred,
Generally speaking, you want to do two things:
1. Position yourself at your job to do work that visibly adds value, or is impactful so that you can build your eminence within your organization
2. Deliver what your manager asks of you. This is assuming that your manager is giving you tasks that help the organization and/or improves your skill set.
If you can achieve the above, then you'll generally progress in an upward trajectory in your career. Some might subscribe to the idea of just putting in the hours, which I do agree you have to do, but putting those hours towards (1) and/or (2) above, you would be using those hours efficiently.
Best of luck, Fred on your journey!

To stand out in your career there are a couple of simple things you can do to rise above and differentiate yourself. The first is to make sure you are accomplishing all the basic responsibilities of whatever role you are doing - this seems obvious, but most people think this is all you have to do to stand out. It is not... it is the basic "price of admission". You must build on being excellent in the basic job responsibilities by doing more: actively seek-out and volunteer to take on stretch projects that show your abilities and willingness; make sure you are taking time to interact on a personal level with members of your team, and build relationships with others which you can find out their responsibilities and how your work fits into theirs; ask (smart) questions of your peers and manager to show your interest and give others a chance to talk about their own passions; in summary - don't rest on doing your basic job responsibilities and think that is enough. To stand out, push yourself beyond the basic into the exceptional.

To excel in any field, embrace a mindset of continuous learning. In every industry you can imagine, methods and practices are constantly evolving. In addition, aim to establish strong relationships and maintain a high level of visibility. Engage in activities and familiarize yourself with individuals who share your professional interests. This not only provides learning opportunities from your colleagues, but it can also open doors to new experiences, enabling you to acquire new skills and enhance your expertise. Furthermore, always keep your motivations in mind. If your sole purpose is financial gain, it can sometimes be challenging to stay dedicated. Finally, share your knowledge. The ability to teach others your craft is a clear sign of your proficiency. :)
