Contrary to popular belief, artists don't have to live in poverty. This misconception is often based on the life of Van Gogh. The reality is that nearly all artists need a steady job within the arts field to make ends meet. Therefore, the kind of artist you choose to be will shape your income.
1. As a Graphic Designer, you'll work for a company, creating logos and advertisements. While you may start with a salary close to the minimum wage, regular pay increases can take your earnings up to $80,000 or more.
2. If you're a Fine Arts gallery-artist, you'll create your own masterpieces, with the gallery taking half of the selling price. Many gallery artists also teach part-time to secure health care and other benefits. You could earn between $30,000 to $60,000.
3. As a Conceptual Artist, you'll design large-scale projects with a social message. You'll likely receive grants from state, federal, or city sources. Many conceptual artists also work full time at a university, which can make it easier to secure grants. You could earn between $60,000 to $100,000. However, this path requires not only artistic talent but also strong writing and public speaking skills.
All these roles typically require college degrees:
1. For Graphic Design, you'll need a Bachelor's degree (4 years) from a private college.
2. As a Gallery Artist, you don't need a degree to exhibit in a gallery, but a Master's degree (6 years) is required if you want to teach.
3. For Conceptual Art, a Master's degree is the minimum requirement, but having a Doctorate degree (8+ years) can increase your success rate with grants.

Your ability to create with digital design opens up a wide range of profitable career choices. Advertising comes to mind first; developing skills for presentation of automobiles is huge here in Michigan. Most all areas of product design require digital design and/or graphic creativity. Hon in on your talents and expand on them. Keep up to date with new technology.
Ask people you admire who use digital art what drove them to their area of expertise. If need be, make appointments with these people and bring a list of questions, write down their answers while speaking in a professional manner. You are gifted, be confident and happy with your pursuit.
